It’s difﬁcult to believe that the HD Awards are already eight years old. When we began, our greatest fear was that the number of projects submitted for consideration would be so meager that the event wouldn’t be worth the considerable effort it takes to create and manage it. Our fears were unfounded, and each year we’ve been gratiﬁed and pleased that there is such enthusiasm and fervor for the competition. This year the process has been in the hands of our managing editor, Alia Akkam. I’ve asked her to weigh in on her experience with project managing the task: “Hundreds of submissions ﬂooded our ofﬁce, and with each one I opened I grew more excited. While all projects ran the gamut from a Gothic-inspired nightclub to cheerful boutique hotel to glamorous dining room, I was blown away by the sheer passion and imagination conveyed through the images I uploaded for the judges. I didn’t envy how challenging it would be for them to narrow down such an impressive range of creativity! One thing I was particularly struck by was the number of entries received from Asia. It’s not news that some of the most adventurous design is being dreamed up in places like China and Thailand, but it was quite inspiring to see so many have a presence in our entry pool—and to see several recognized as honorees in Photo by Clodagh this issue. What draws me most to this industry is the power of cultural diffusion, and the collaboration of global talents. I couldn’t be more thrilled this year’s awards greatly reﬂect this synergy.” Special thanks to the judges: David Ashen, d-ash design; Jeffrey Beers, Jeffrey Beers International; Hans Galutera, BG Studio; Jon Kastl, Champalimaud; and Therese Virserius, Therese Virserius Design. They worked long and hard—and with much good humor and patience—to decide on the winners and ﬁnalists. Congratulations to all! Looking forward, we’re thrilled that Alexandra Champalimaud has agreed to participate in the keynote conversation with me at HD Boutique in September. Alex is a master of design, and with her redo of the fabled Waldorf=Astoria ready to be unveiled soon, she’ll have a lot to say—all of it, I have no doubt, fascinating and instructive. Hope to see you in South Beach.
