> In the introduction to his new book Graphic
Design + Architecture: A 20th Century History
(Rockport Publishers), Richard Poulin, cofounder of New York design consultancy
Poulin + Morris Inc., writes, “Architecture
speaks of form, space, and purpose,
celebrating human continuity and offering
experiences that both function and inspire.
Graphic design—typography, image, and
symbol—communicates the subtleties of time
and place and tells cultural and visual stories,
clarifying a building’s purpose and echoing its
architectural message.”
The tome is an exploration of the
inextricable relationship between the two
disciplines, and how words and symbols have
the power to transform built environments
and narrate stories, spanning historic
structures like Rome’s Pantheon, inventions
such as incandescent light bulbs, Broadway’s
theater façades, Hector Guimard’s artful
entrances to the Paris Metro, Texaco drive-in
service stations, the iconic Hollywoodland
sign, and Miami’s Design District. Although
environmental graphic design is a relatively
new term, before delving into the modern
world Poulin shows how its roots can be traced
to prehistoric rock pictographs. “My research
confirmed for me that the integral connection
that exists between graphic design and
architecture has been evident for centuries,”
he notes.

Crown Perth can while an evening away
in a casino reflective of Perth’s rugged and
dramatic landscape. Sean Tanner, principal
of Las Vegas-based Cagley & Tanner, says the
goal was to “capture the mood and spirit of
Western Australia without resorting to typical
design stereotypes. Mining plays a central role
in the economic engine powering Perth, and
the local design vernacular is skewed heavily
towards industrial chic. With this in mind we
decided to use that as a point of departure, and
layer it with materials that are both locally
abundant and add a sense of glamour.”
First, a mélange of polished metal tubes
sets the tone in the lobby, then a glittering
screen of mother of pearl discs eases the
transition to the gaming floor, where there
are backlit crystalline-form ceiling panels and
perimeter walls lined with illuminated onyx
pilasters and handmade tufted leather tiles.
“We have also been careful to try to strike

the proper balance between elegance and
leisure that appeals to the Western Australian
sensibility,” Tanner explains. Examples
include the clusters of textural beehive-shaped
chandeliers with amber crystals interspersed
with driftwood, as well as the casino’s
“waterfall” chandeliers made from authentic
raw quartz crystals strung from polished
copper canopies.
