1 2 Unconventionality is the norm at a Philippe Starck hotel By Regina Winkle-BRyan Photography by FRanCiS aMianD In a grown-up world filled with don’ts, the creators of Mama Shelter say do—and have fun while you’re at it. Mama Shelter Marseille, the second property in what will become a collection of six hotels by 2014 (Paris opened in 2008; Istanbul, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Los Angeles are on the horizon) cultivates surprise. Guestrooms, some of them powder pink, are outfitted with playful masks portraying the likes of Darth Vader or Clark Kent; a pink foosball table and a shrine to guitars are found in the restaurant; pool toys hang above the bar; and display cases and clever seating add pops of color and intrigue to public space. 1. In Mama restaurant, guests sit on wooden picnic benches undeneath a graffiti and calligraphy covered ceiling. 2. Colorful display cases and a whimsical bench add visual interest to Mama Shelter’s reception area. hospitalitydesign.com January/February 2013 085http://www.hospitalitydesign.com
