first impressions THE DEcoraTED apparEl group Editorial Office The ‘I’ in Team w hen my kids were younger, I was like every other parent — spending endless hours at soccer fields, hockey rinks, gymnastics facilities and the like. I cheered, rallied and got involved as a parent advisor and chaperone on many youth sports-related trips. As a mom, I wanted my kids to succeed and as a fan, I wanted the entire team to do its best and learn the fundamentals of sportsmanship and experience the camaraderie that playing sports could offer. I also spent tons of money on uniforms, practice outfits, travel gear and fanwear. I shudder to think how much money having three kids involved in extra-curricular activities ended up costing in the end. But it was all worth it. The commitment we have to our kids’ activities and making sure they have what they need is evident in the athleticwear, team and spirit apparel arena, as it has been one of the strongest sectors of our industry and has remained resilient during tough economic times. There’s no doubt parents throughout the United States have continued to buy team uniforms and spiritwear for themselves and their children. As an apparel decorator, this is an opportunity to succeed in a niche that sustains itself despite economic travails. Also, the American public has embraced a healthy lifestyle and has created a niche for athletic-related decorated apparel. From running to yoga and other sports, there’s apparel for every activity within this niche, giving you a multitude of blank canvases with which to work. Despite the life lesson that I always taught my kids — “There is no ‘i’ in team” — there is one “I” that is your go-to source for all things team, spirit and athleticwear-related.
