known for. I want a customer to open that box and be blown away by the quality.” Withaar believes appliqué on sweat shirts and jackets is and will continue to be strongly popular. Sportco also began offering allover screen printing with lower minimums, as well as stock name-drop designs to make it easier for the customer to order — all of which has been a success so far in 2010, he says. AHEAD OF THE CURVE It is important that Sportco stay abreast of trends and identify what customers will want. Withaar remains conscious of trends prevalent at retail while assuring he is well informed. “We [stay aware of] the newest, hottest trends,” he says. “And, I read Impressions and other trade publications.” Withaar believes trends can be driven by professional and college sports, with a trickle-down effect on high school and other team markets. The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) industries have influenced the trends for young adults, from oversized prints and fashion T-shirts, to zippered hoods — all of which are currently prevalent trends. Regarding current and future decorating trends, Withaar says decoration sizes will come full circle. “I have been in the business for 20 years and have seen many trends,” he says. “Five years ago, small, center-chest decoration was very big. Last year, large, oversized prints started to make a big impact and have much potential to grow. I feel within a few years, we will be back to basic screen printing. “I feel all oversized prints, along with appliqué and multimedia, will be very popular,” he adds. “The trends that will emerge as more popular are sublimation and regular screen printing.” Sportco created a strategic plan for 2010 and, so far, the company is hitting all of its goals. Moving into 2011, Withaar plans to continue building the decoration and creative services areas, along with the Sportco Authentic brand. “Sportco Authentic is a growing brand for us and has been received very well by retailers, team dealers and promotional products distributors,” Withaar says. “We have two new styles of Sportco Authentic coming out in September that will make a A Supplement to Impressions big impact on the industry and, with the benchmarking we have done, has been received well by all participants.” Advice for any decorator looking to find his niche is simple: Know what you are getting into. A new decorator should do his homework, including researching the type of decoration that interests him and the latest trends to assure the two are aligned with his business vision. Says Withaar: “We do so much contract decoration for embroidery and screen printing companies because they do not understand or have the resources to do what we can do, and we help them out in their daily sales.” Jennifer A.
