Think about it. Thanks to progress in the manufacturing of apparel fabrics, you can offer your customers uniforms and spiritwear that were hardly thought of only a decade ago. It’s been widely documented that today’s fabrics are chock full of performance properties, including stretch, moisture-wicking, anti-microbial and UV-protective capabilities, that — in the past — would’ve seemed more like a pipedream reserved By JAMAR LASTER for an episode of “The Jetsons” rather than reality. But like most other things, with every benefit of technological advancement comes an equally challenging set of obstacles, each giving rise to the other. Call it the yin and yang of decorating. For example, the aforementioned fabric technology may be an athlete’s dream, but performance apparel can be a nightmare for decorators to deal with. That’s because many of these garments contain polyester, can have ink bleeding problems and they are sensitive to the high temperatures needed to cure plastisol ink. Add to that the stretchy properties of many performance garments, and attempting to decorate them via screen printing becomes a very scary proposition. Thus, improvements are needed. In this issue of Team & Spirit Apparel, contributing writer Deborah Sexton explores the two sides of this proverbial coin. In her cover story, “Team Sports Decorating Trends,” she examines the technological advancements in team sports fabrics and uniforms — and how they’ve become a challenge for decorators — but then juxtaposes them with the ways in which manufacturers of ink, heat-applied graphics and embroidery supplies, as well as other technologies, are making it easier to surmount these challenges.
