Anything you can get in Switzerland that you can’t find here for your muesli? You can find everything that is needed in New York. It is easily made and one can vary it. What counts is very little sweetening, sufficient fibers and fresh fruit. What is one thing you miss about living in Switzerland? What does your wife miss? Sometimes the quiet nights and the stars in “the city that never sleeps.” Favorite food you can get in New York, you can’t get in Switzerland? Crab cakes and key lime pie are specialties you would not find easily in Switzerland— or hardly as tasteful as in New York. Ambassador Christoph Bubb, consul general of Switzerland in New York, and his wife, Regula Bircher Bubb’s own Muesli Ambassador 11⁄2 lbs. five-grain cereal mix 1 cup wheat bran 1 cup coarsely ground wheat meal 1-2 cups sunflower seeds 1 ⁄3 cup linseeds 1 ⁄2 cup powdered milk 1 tsp. vanilla sugar 1 cup water 1 ⁄2 cup safflower oil Mix well and roast 40-45 minutes at 300 degrees°F Stir from time to time during roasting Add cold milk Add sliced or grated apple or any other fresh fruit You may also want to add: plain yogurt 1 cup of dried raisins 1 cup of pumpkin seeds 1 cup of grated almonds or hazelnuts special recipe for this Swiss culinary classic What’s the last book you read? Small Numbers—Big Impact, a book on Swiss emigrants and Americans of Swiss background like Albert Gallatin—the second Secretary of the Treasury, Louis Chevrolet—the car builder, Johann Sutter—the pioneer, Adolf Rickenbacher—the “Father of the Electric Guitar,” or people like Steve Ballmer [Microsoft CEO] and Renée Zellweger. Where were you born? In Winterthur, a city known for its industrial past and its present cultural life. What was your first job? Waiter in a hotel in Davos for a couple of months before starting my studies in law. What’s your favorite spot in Switzerland? Zurich, of course, and I am particularly fond of the Engadin Valley, with its wonderful light, which inspired famous painters and philosophers. What are the key words you like to use when describing your country (besides cheese and chocolate!)? Precision, innovation, modesty. What is the most spectacular thing about Switzerland? That it is commonly perceived as a tradition-oriented, nicely but slowly working country. In reality it is one of the most innovative and competitive high-tech countries in the world. Do you ski? With great pleasure in Switzerland and particularly in the Rocky Mountains in the United States. You’re based in New York. How often do you entertain dignitaries?
