At Harrah’s and Harveys, which are neighbors on the Nevada side of the lake, Lowe says he is also focusing carefully on appealing to incentive groups with many generations, from Millennials to Generation X to boomers. Working with planners to make a single program appeal to every age group can take forethought, he says, but can be worth it. One recent program Lowe worked on at a property nightclub had dining stations for each decade, from a milkshake stand for the ‘’50s to sushi as the current trend. By the same token, he says, providing “adventure travel” experiences is easy enough in Lake Tahoe’s rugged landscape, but the term means vastly different things to different generations. Another big change coming to the Lake Tahoe area next year is the addition of the destination’s first five-star resort. Opening in late 2009, the Ritz-Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe, will be a 173-room, ski-in ski-out resort with a luxurious spa featuring 16 treatment rooms and a private pool, among other amenities. The Ritz-Carlton property will give the destination as a whole credibility with planners of the highest-end incentive programs, says Jason Neary, director of conference sales for the North Lake Tahoe Visitors Bureau. And that will benefit the destination as a whole, he believes.
