In Huatulco, a total of about 2,700 hotel rooms are available. Huatulco’s modern infrastructure and facilities for groups and conventions make this one of Mexico’s ideal destinations for this market segment. Several of the resort hotels have convention centers and combined meeting facilities for groups of up to 1,500 people, and are well versed in catering to the special needs of companies and organizations. Spectacular events or gala dinners can be easily organized at one of the unpopulated beaches or any of the many parks and plazas. The Bays of Huatulco are located on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Oaxaca, at the edge of the Sierra Madre del Sur, about 350 miles southeast of Acapulco and 600 miles south of Mexico City. In Oaxaca, the country’s fifth largest state, is where you’ll find the real Mexico, full of history, archaeology, culture, mystery, ancient Indian languages, customs and beliefs, and a population that has carried over its millennium-old traditions and rites to the present day. This terrain, still difficult to conquer, has helped to preserve not only its traditions and archaeological connections to a great past, but its natural environment, especially the nine bays of Conejos, Tangolunda, Chahué, Santa Cruz, Organo, Maguey, Cacaluta, Chachacual and San Agustin. Only four bays are currently being developed: Santa Cruz, Chahué, Tangolunda, and most recently, Conejos. San Agustin has been set aside for future expansion, while Organo, Maguey, Cacaluta and Chachacual will not be touched, since they are part of the Huatulco National Park. According to Huatulco’s development plan, 60 per- H cent of the resort area will remain a natural reserve. In 2005, Huatulco was the first tourism destination on the North American continent, and only the third in the world, to receive the Green Globe 21 award for sustainable tourism development. The Bays of Huatulco are truly blessed with an incredible climate, with more than 330 sunny days a year. The temperatures might be as low as 70°F on a cool January night but reach as high as 95°F on a hot summer day. The annual average temperature is a comfortable 85° F.
