The historic downtown area attractions are available for group functions. The Ethno-Botanical Garden, part of the Santo Domingo Cultural Complex, has a courtyard with a capacity for up to 800 people; the former Government Palace, where the Palace Museum (MUPAL) now stands, also accommodates up to 800 people. The Macedonio Alcalá Theater is an excellent option for conferences and presentations, and the Juarez Theater, with state-of-the-art technology in audio and lighting, will make your event come alive. Oaxaca offers a great variety of handicrafts like the multi-colored alebrijes (figurines carved in wood), greenglass clay and black-clay ceramics, woven pieces made with palm leaves in the forms of bird cages, baskets and lamps, knifemaking, iron rod creations, saddlery, tanned leather, and textiles. Near the city is the Monte Albán archaeological site, ancient capital of the Zapotec Indians. The main plaza is surrounded by pyramid bases, terraces, plazas, patios and worshiping areas. In the city of Oaxaca, regional cuisine entices. Visitors can savor unique dishes like the delicious tasajo asado, the cecina enchilada, the Oaxaca sausage, the famous quesillo (a stringy cheese), the tlayudas, tamales wrapped in banana leaves and, of course, the seven different types of mole: black, red, coloradito, chichilo, green, yellow, and manchamanteles. Among the popular regional drinks are mezcal made with espadín agave, hot chocolate made with milk or water, plus the famous aromatic coffee from plantations found along the state’s coast.
