T ech Racking It Up A dishwasher design that does it all As an inventor who, when single, would have to wait a day or two in order to ﬁll up his dishwasher before running it—and who once tripped over a forgotten open door—it’s no wonder that B.J. Singh, president of Singh Engineering Inc., created the InSink Dishwasher. He also wasn’t keen on stacking dirty dishes in the sink or on the countertop before rinsing and then loading them into the dishwasher. “Water would drip onto the floor and it was just very inconvenient, inefﬁcient and not suitable for my lifestyle,” he said. “I thought to myself, ‘This has to be done in a better way.’” Enter the InSink Dishwasher, a compact dishwashing appliance that is located, as one may suspect, right in the sink. Shipped as one fully contained, pre-plumbed unit complete with sink, base and dishwasher, the InSink Dishwasher takes the tedium out of washing up. “I think the biggest benefit is convenience,” noted Singh. “You basically leave the dishwasher open in the sink, which is where you put your dirty dishes anyway, and when the dish rack is full, you start it.” Available in two conﬁgurations, one with a single dishwasher on one side of the sink and the other with one dishwasher on either side of the sink, each dishwasher—a drawer on slides—easily glides in and out from under the unit’s countertop (so you can use the sink when the dishwasher is closed or running) and contains a dish rack that can accommodate six place settings. As Singh explained, for the double configuration, homeowners could use one of the racks for dirty dishes and the other to store clean dishes, so there would be no need to even put the dishes away. Tucked out of sight when not in use, the InSink Dishwasher can accommodate six place settings and is equipped with numerous technological and eco-friendly features. recyclable stainless steel, it is currently in the process of being Energy Star-certiﬁed, uses a sensor to adjust water consumption depending on dirt level, stores the water from the ﬁnal rinse/sanitize cycle to be used for the next pre-rinse cycle and has a builtin, point-of-use water heater for signiﬁcantly reduced cycle times and energy usage. The unit can be safely opened for the dishes to air dry and includes (if desired) a twogallon, reverse-osmosis water-ﬁltration system that eliminates the need for rinse aids (and the occurrence of pesky water spots). MORE TO COME As for the dishwasher’s looks, well, that is up to you. It can be integrated into cabinetry and topped with the same material as other countertops in the kitchen, and any faucet can be installed. It comes in stainless steel and an acrylic composite that is currently offered in white, though Singh has plans to introduce black, blue and dark gray. “As consumers and kitchen designers demand different colors, we will introduce those choices,” he said. Singh also has grand plans for an even greener and more convenient future. He intends to offer options to customers that include using the base cabinets to house an ice machine or a wine cooler, to design a unit with drawers that open and close automatically and is now working on a dishwasher that uses no detergent at all. “All of the detergent that goes into the water supply that will be cut back drastically,” he said. “And the dishwasher will use even less water.” Singh is currently in talks with some major appliance manufacturers to distribute the In-Sink Dishwasher. Not only does it save energy and water (thanks to its compact versatility), it comes with a garbage disposal so food particles can be rinsed directly into the sink and, sans vertical door, won’t pose a safety hazard. Because it lives underneath the countertop, no sacriﬁce of work or cabinet space is required. “The only area that’s being utilized for the mechanics is right beneath the sink. The base cabinets are fully functioning,” said Singh. In addition, the 45-dB unit has three wash options, automatically feeds detergent to the unit depending on cycle settings and offers an ergonomic, back-friendly alternative to the traditional dishwasher.
