The house was pretty stunning not only because of the matter-offactness and elegance of Johnson’s design, but also because it was built in 1948 yet still resonates today. In fact, just a few days before I made the visit, I was looking through images of Steve Hermann’s dramatic Glass Pavilion, which made a bit of a media splash. At 1,728 sq. ft., the Glass House is not gigantic, but as I walked through its interior, taking in its minimal furnishings, open layout and wondrous views, all the necessary implements of a life seemed to be there: a modest kitchen; a set of Barcelona chairs in the living area; a dining table; a “bedroom” with just a bed, a nightstand and a desk; a small circular bathroom and a room divider containing limited storage. Interestingly enough, the kitchen was where the house really showed its age. The old electric stove was equipped with four forlorn coils, and the dated cabinetry had definitely seen better days. In a way, the discrepancy was a reminder of how intimately our lives are intertwined with our kitchens. The rest of the home still looked very modern and relevant. And the simplicity of the living arrangement was actually quite moving, especially after we left the house and walked up a slope to gaze back down upon it. I began to imagine Johnson and life partner David Whitney living there, going about their daily routine while exposed to the the stands of trees and the acres of verdant land Johnson owned. Simplicity and authenticity seem to be the mantra these days— as reflected in our cover kitchen (page 32) and our Trends report on kitchen countertops (page 12).
