Editor’s Note The Future Is Now I remember reading a few years ago that, in the future, blue would be the “new green.” And that water and air quality would become the focus of the environmental movement. Well, to some extent, it seems the future has arrived. Just today, I received a press release from the Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI) about a new campaign to strengthen Indoor Air Quality Requirements in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. The campaign seems to take issue with IEQ Credit 4, also known as “EQ Credit: Low-Emitting Interiors.” According to Mark Rossolo, GEI director of public affairs, the proposed credit “calls for limits on only a fraction of all potentially hazardous compounds,” leaving out “hundreds, if not thousands, of other potentially toxic compounds and complex mixtures.” And yesterday, the Hult International Business School in London announced the theme of its second annual Global Case Challenge: the global clean water crisis. As part of this year’s competition, which will “crowd-source” solutions from top students in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai, the school is partnering with Water.org, an organization founded by Gary White and actor Matt Damon. On a more “local” level, this is the issue in which we reveal the winners of the annual K+BB Product Innovator Awards, and while I won’t give anything away—you’ll have to read the coverage, which begins on page 20—I do want to say how gratifying, and mildly troubling, it was to see the large number of WaterSense-certified and water-filtration products that were entered this year: gratifying because water conservation is gaining ground, but troubling because water shortages and water quality are obviously a growing concern. As I mentioned earlier this year, government reports predict that, within the next three years, 36 states will experience water shortages. What is heartening, though, is that schools, organizations and even corporations have taken notice and are working on solutions. Oregon State University, for example, recently announced the launch of a renewable materials degree program, which makes so much sense. And then there are “green” advocates such as architect and educator Eric Corey Freed, the subject of our Profile column (page 40), whose passion for what he does is so inspiring that it’s almost breathtaking. By the way, as we did last year, we tried to “green” the content of this issue as much as possible. To this end, Focus (page 12) features a Q&A with the EPA on its Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. The questions were supplied by designer Mark Brady, who has written extensively on the topic for our blog, K+BB Collective. If you’re interested in his blog posts, visit www.kbbcollective.com and click on his photo. And while our kitchen and bath feature may not be what one would consider “hard-core green,” they do incorporate eco-friendly elements, which perhaps is a positive sign of progress being made. n DESIGN + INNOV TION + LIFESTYLE / November 2010 A EDITORIAL executive editor Alice Liao (646) 654-4408 aliao@kbbonline.com creative director Jonathan Marsland (646) 654-4472 jmarsland@kbbonline.com Graphic production artist Jessica Farley (646) 654-7245 jessica.farley@nielsen.com INDUSTRY WATCH eNewsletter Nichole Schulze naschulze@yahoo.com editorial advisory board Jeff Burton; John Buscarello, asid; Jeff Cannata, cmkbd; Mick De Giulio; Jamie Gibbs; James Lev, aia; Candace Morris; Florence Perchuk, ckd; Lloyd Princeton; Roderick Shade; David Stimmel; Dick Titus; Gary White, cmkbd vice president/retail desiGn Group Doug Hope (770) 291-5453 doug.hope@nielsen.com TERRITORY MANAGERS MidWest John Wilson 35 Commanders Dr. Washington Crossing, PA 18977 (215) 493-0244 john.wilson@nielsen.com east coast Paul Bienkowski 2422 Ellington Rd., South Windsor, CT 06074 (860) 644-3861; FAX: (860) 644-0700 pbienkowski@cox.net east coast Phil Viscidi One Hollis St., Suite 305 Wellesley, MA 02482 (781) 431-1320; FAX: (781) 431-1968 phil@viscidi.com illinois Melani Beattie 3000 Sheridan Road #4, Chicago, IL 60657 (312) 218-5691 melani.beattie@gmail.com West coast and south West Larry Shore 805 Avalon Drive, Seal Beach, CA 90740 (562) 598-5560 larry.shore@nielsen.com classiFieds and special sections Diane Kennedy 1145 Sanctuary Parkway Suite #355, Alpharetta, GA 30004 (770) 291-5519 diane.kennedy@nielsen.com vp kitchen and bath Group Brian Pagel 1145 Sanctuary Parkway, Suite #355, Alpharetta, GA 30004 (770) 291-5438 brian.pagel@nielsen.com SUPPORT production ManaGer Nan McDowell (770) 291-5480 nan.mcdowell@nielsen.com reprints Rosie Hassell The YGS Group (800) 501-9571 Ext. 136 kbb@theYGSgroup.com circulation custoMer service (800) 879-8859 FAX: (847) 291-8416 nkb@omeda.com list rental product ManaGer Bart Piccirillo (845) 731-2768 bart.piccirillo@eraepd.com the official sponsor of Alice Liao, Executive Editor aliao@kbbonline.com Copyright © 2010 by Nielsen Business Media, Inc.
