EDITOR’S NOTE DESIGN + INNOV TION + LIFESTYLE / March 2013 A Quality Plumbing I recently had Dan, my plumber, replace a lav faucet. Actually, I had called him about a slow drain but when he reached for the faucet to rinse his hands, he nearly hurt himself trying to turn the recalcitrant hot water handle. Yes, it was stuck—had been for quite a while. In fact, I couldn’t remember the last time it operated without putting up a fight or threatening injury to my fingers. But I figured it was time and asked Dan if he could install a new one. No problem, he said and proceeded to remove the offending fitting. He told me he would make a run to a local plumbing supply house but first wanted me to see how cheaply made my faucet was. He pointed to the parts that should have been metal, instead of plastic, and explained how the limescale-laden cartridge was contributing to leaking. (My faucet was leaking?) Dan recommended I upgrade to a faucet from a plumbing manufacturer, any plumbing manufacturer with a name I knew, to which I agreed enthusiastically. Before heading out to make the purchase, he gave me a brief rundown of some of the differences in ease of installation between the major brands, which I found fascinating. As an editor who traffics mainly in words and images, I love hearing professionals talk about the products, companies and other industry issues I only write about. For me, part of the pleasure of having designers judge the K+BB Design Awards—the deadline is June 24; check www. kbbonline.com for information—and the K+BB Product Innovator Awards is having a courtside seat to their discussions about projects, problems they’ve encountered on the job and, of course, experiences with clients and products. And the halls of Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will no doubt come alive with such talk and more when KBIS 2013 hits New Orleans for the first time in show history. For a preview of this year’s event, which takes place April 19-21, check out the KBIS section beginning on page 10. If the articles are any indication, the show promises to deliver much in the way of new products, new educational opportunities, new industry connections and new memories to cherish. I also want to direct your attention to the inaugural K+BB Brand Preference Report on page 44. It comprises 31 top 10 lists of preferred kitchen and bath brands in a variety of product categories—all named by K+BB readers. Did your favorites get a mention? Finally, I want to end this column by expressing my deepest and most heart-felt gratitude to all of you in the kitchen and bath industry who have educated me, dazzled me with your talent and your latest wares, shown me great hospitality and friendship and shared with me your professional wisdom and insight throughout the past seven years. This is my last issue as an editor of K+BB, for I have decided to move on. But hopefully, our paths will cross again.
