KBIS SPECIAL SECTION 50 Years of Leadership Through Learning It was a letter in Kitchen Business magazine from Leon Raider, a Kitchen Kompact rep, that sparked the formation 50 years ago of what is today the National Kitchen & Bath Association. The article, in which Raider outlined the need and potential structure for a national kitchen dealer association, attracted the attention of a handful of pioneers. They met in April 1963 near Philadelphia, contributed $463 and formed the American Institute of Kitchen Dealers. Dues were set at $10 a month, and H. Dean Church of Custom Kitchens by Church, Swarthmore, Pa., was elected the first president. Renamed the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) in 1983, it now has almost 60,000 members from all industry segments in the U.S. and Canada and has spread its influence as far away as Australia and New Zealand. The founders set goals 50 years ago that are still the cornerstone of the NKBA today. These included “national training schools, accredited college courses, standards, certification, design contests, advertising, public relations, pooling information and promoting public confidence in our products and services.” Half a century later, another manufacturer’s rep, John Morgan, is the 2013 NKBA president. He agrees wholeheartedly with Raider’s philosophy that “an association can be established only through the cooperative efforts of many.” “One of the biggest accomplishments of the association has been connecting the industry, reaching out to all segments and communicating, sharing and learning from each other,” says Morgan. “The NKBA’s track record speaks for itself.” The NKBA has developed four design certifications and one nondesign certification: the Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer (AKBD), Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), Certified Bath Designer (CBD), Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD) and Certified Kitchen & Bath Professional (CKBP). The association’s network of accredited colleges across North America prepares students for careers in the kitchen and bath industry. Its active public relations, marketing, lead generation and social media programs promote NKBA professionals to consumers as the preferred resource for creating the two most important rooms in the home. It offers consumers valuable information in its Kitchen Planner and Bath Planner as well as an enewsletter. The NKBA has produced nine authoritative textbooks in its 14 + K BB Professional Resource Library, written by industry professionals and reviewed by an association panel of experts, with ongoing updates and new titles in development. The association created the Kitchen & Bathroom Guidelines with Access Standards to aid professionals in the safe and effective planning of these rooms. The 31 kitchen guidelines and 27 bathroom guidelines now reflect the current industry environment, future trends, consumer lifestyles, new research, new building codes and current industry practices. They are now available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The NKBA has expanded the KBIS Conference program in 2013 to approximately 70 sessions, all presented by vetted industry pros as part of its innovative new Voices of the Industry program. They cover four key areas — Design & Inspiration, Business Management, Focus on the Customer and Sales & Marketing. This year the NKBA is launching its most comprehensive Learning Program ever, offering career paths in eight competency areas through its convenient LMS (learning management system). In addition to design, the competencies include Talent Management, Communication, Adapt & Innovate, Focus on the Consumer, Business Management, Leadership and Sales & Marketing. The career paths move from beginner through intermediate to advanced levels. Starting in 2014, the NKBA will be co-locating KBIS with the International Builders Show (IBS) in Las Vegas. This new Design and Construction Week puts the NKBA at the epicenter of one of the world’s largest gatherings focused on new ideas, products and technologies to design, build and remodel homes.
