Already more than 50 new exhibitors have come on board for the 2013 KBIS show April 1921 in New Orleans to ensure their spot in the 2014 event. Alongside all these tangible accomplishments is the immeasurable benefit of rich friendships and invaluable networking that come with a NKBA membership. “I’ve never been to an NKBA event where I didn’t meet someone I learned something from,” says Morgan. And he’s been to a lot of NKBA events in his lifetime. Like many association members today, Morgan is second generation. His father Jack started a rep agency in 1978, earned his CKD in 1981 and was in the first group of Hall of Fame members inducted by his local chapter. “It was just understood I was going to be part of this,” recalls Morgan. “As a teenager I was dragged to chapter meetings and at the time, I didn’t want to do it, but now I’m grateful. The relationships that we built and the knowledge that we gained have truly given me the tools to feed our family, pay tuitions and so much more.” Morgan, who was recognized by K+BB in 2000 as one of “Ten to Watch under 35,” believes that to succeed in today’s new business environment, companies and the NKBA both must be “willing to be forward thinking.” “Time is the biggest challenge today, whereas it used to be money,” he notes. “Finding the time to be able to invest in learning and implementing new things into our businesses is fundamental.” “Many kitchen and bath professionals are doing really well because they are reinventing themselves, not trying to recreate what they had 20 years ago. Evolving themselves and their businesses is the key,” observes Morgan. “For example, I work with many companies that have enhanced their business and customer experience by engaging and working with their clients in new ways. They collaborate and communicate in open environments. This is almost heretical considering our industry has traditionally been a very closed system where we held our information close to our chest.” “But today our world is open architecture,” he stresses, “Consumers 16 + K BB are used to sharing and collaborating in their everyday lives, and many in our industry are finding success by engaging clients the way they expect to be engaged. The same forward-thinking attitude applies to the NKBA today. Morgan believes strongly that social media and new technology open up unlimited opportunities for the association to expand its outreach. “We need to embrace new technologies and learn how to employ them in our own businesses and in the association,” he emphasizes. The NKBA as a thought leader is helping the industry by taking a 360-degree approach to learning starting this year. While design is important as always, the NKBA has expanded its learning and development programs to encompass one’s entire business, from how to collect money with solutions from accounts receivable professionals, to how to hire people. The focus is on all aspects of business today. The new Learning Paths approach lets people take charge of their own careers. The NKBA’s convenient LMS not only creates career paths, but also can assess where you are in your own career development, where you need to go and how the NKBA can help. Nothing speaks to embracing change more than the creation of Design and Construction Week in 2014. “I thought of course that it would be well received, but in my wildest dreams never realized how positive it would be,” says Morgan. “People ask why we did it. As an association, we could not miss out on the opportunity to be a cornerstone of such as big event, knowing that with NAHB we can draw 75,000 to 100,000 to an event in the next few years. There is no way to pass up on that!” Morgan has known first-hand the power of the show since he was a kid. “I remember being eight or nine years old and so disappointed that my sister and I were too young to get into the show,” he remembers. “The final day they let us in, and we were just blown away by how big it was and how much there was to see. Of course we did all the things they don’t want kids doing, like grabbing all the freebies, but it left an indelible impression on me.” “A year after the association was founded, they put together a kitchen show that was important to providing member benefits for the next 49 years,” notes Morgan. “This new grand event, Design and Construction Week, is our opportunity to support members for the next 50 years.” Why would a young person join the NKBA today? “I would repeat the advice my dad gave me,” says Morgan. “If you want to be good at something, find someone who is great at it. I would tell them to take the opportunity to meet as many people as they can, seek out successful people, and walk away with the knowledge and tools that are going to make their career better.
