TRENDS Continued from page 35 Depending on the customer and their lifestyle, those choices can coalesce in interesting ways. David Stimmel, Stimmel Design Group, Ambler, Pa., explained, “We’re finding a particular new type of client who has a budget of $30,000 to $40,000 who still wants all the latest conveniences afforded by a new design, but they want us to reuse existing elements.” That’s the buyer who embraces “soft green” – ridding themselves of the heavy and complicated finishes of the past few years, for example, but not the actual cabinets. “This customer knows there’s still life the millwork, and they don’t want the cabinets going to a landfill,” he added. He’s also seeing the trend toward “soft modern” growing. It’s a transitional look that encompasses anything from white paired with white counters, walls and cabinetry to more exotic wood veneers. Copper and rolled steel are among the emerging materials, eclipsing the more common and obvious stainless steel. Architect Lou Batsch, Benelli & Batsch Architects, New York City, echoed the recycled/ upcycled movement, plus pairing stock with custom or customizable elements. His firm is restoring an 1820s stone farmhouse. The floors are reclaimed, wide-plank maple from an old barn on the property, he explained, while the kitchen is “a modern take on a simple country kitchen, with lots of natural light and white-painted cabinets topped with cleft Italian slate, a dark gray with white veining.” To keep the budget on track, said Batsch, “We specified standard cabinets, but paired those with a custom side panel enclosure and a counter-depth refrigerator for an affordable built-in look.” Five-Star Luxury Then there is a customer who is trading up not merely for lifestyle reasons, but is seeking quality, explained Jeff Burton, The Bath + Beyond, San Francisco. “People are buying up. They’ve tried lower-quality items and are now disappointed with what they are ‘stuck’ with.” These are the customers who, Burton continued, “were basically burned and are willing to spend more to get quality and performance from their bath fixtures and plumbing.” The customer with the wherewithal to take on large-budget projects is definitely trending older. The younger customer tapped out their home equity years earlier, and it’s the older empty nesters with the cash. That said, commented John Buscarello, ASID, New York City-based John A. Buscarello, Inc., “They’re updating their kitchens and baths now so they don’t have to deal with it when they’re 80, they’re replacing satin nickel faucets with chrome and tearing out tubs and adding larger walk-in showers without shower doors.” A more conservative client might be playing it safe by looking at neutrals like beige, he added. “Right now white is really popular along with gray, which is not an 80s gray, but one with more taupe. But I see a lot of people choosing color.” Kitchen and bath designer Celia Berliner, Celia Berliner Design, LLC, New York City, said neutral white or light gray have been an ongoing trend used for engineered and quartz countertops and/or high-gloss finish lacquer cabinets. Glass tiles are still widely used in fun or soothing colors depending on the size and use of the bathroom. Always beautiful, marble selections are pleasing to the eye and are also subject to the client’s budget. Berliner also mentioned being tasked with finding or developing multifunctional drawers and storage to include internal outlets and trays in the custom cabinetry and vanities. “It all has to do with offering the practical, functional and high tech for today’s client,” she added. Even lighting is disappearing. Ample ceiling lighting 36 + K BB April 2013 / www.kbbonline.com / The Official Sponsor of KBIS www.kbis.com http://www.kbbonline.com http://www.kbis.com
