KBIS 2013 COVERAGE Featured Speeches Offered Continuing Educations Credits at KBIS Erickson On Friday, April 19 and Sunday April 21, KBIS introduced two business leaders to its program — Tammy Erickson of Tammy Erickson Associates and David Bromstad of HGTV. Erickson discussed the importance of various generations on the kitchen and bath industry, and Bromstad’s topic was economical consumer trends to use to one’s advantage. can also offer a brief moment of relaxation after a busy day. This generation appreciates choices and options — as Erickson said, “They want you to tell them six ways a certain project can be done.” According to Erickson, the Gen Y generation is not purchasing kitchen and bath design services in huge numbers just yet; they are just starting to think about money and are eager to make their mark on the world. For them, convenience trumps aesthetics. Their dream kitchen would have ample storage and be crafted and authentic. They are big on technology, but will most likely consult with their parents on any major remodeling decisions. Erickson’s What’s in An Age? Bromstad’s Smart Business during Fragile Times Erickson’s speech on “The Influence of the Generations on the Kitchen and Bath Industry” at KBIS was an enlightening discussion on how to cater to and attract these various generations. Her firm specializes in helping clients build smart organizations and defines people of the same generations as those of the same age who have experienced some of the same global events, therefore sharing some of the same impressions. Her generations included: • Traditionalists – accepting of institutions, accustomed to using money as a metric of success • Baby Boomers – competitive, appreciative of encouragement • Gen X – focused on task completion, not time spent; accustomed to using technology in the workplace • Gen Y – want to broaden their options, family-centric, appreciative of leadership development • Re-Generation – the savvy generation that is gearing up; one that saves money, rents, improvises and compromises Bromstad, HGTV personality and winner of HGTV’s “Design Star,” discussed trends, budgets and the consumer. With the struggling economy, he described economical consumer trends that designers can use to their advantage. “During a financial decline, people are focused on buying smart for longevity,” he said. The key is incorporating high-end design with quality, budget-conscious materials. While the most money should be spent on more important items, a design can still be trendy without the high cost. Most importantly, a designer should educate the client on making the right decisions when choosing materials and appliances. Keeping the client informed regarding materials and cost throughout the process is essential. In dealing with “clients with beer pockets and champagne wishes,” Bromstad recommends showing materials that are similar but more cost effective. Many mid-tier appliances have commercial-grade lines, and the difference between custom and stock items also makes a difference in price. As for the design business, he gave a few pointers on keeping business operating costs under control. Sacrificing a portion of profit to maintain a client base is smart business, since everyone loves a sale. For loyal business, demand lower costs from suppliers and invest in local artisans. “Kitchen and baths continue to become sanctuaries,” he said. There is more time spent in the kitchen than in any other room in the home, aside from the bedrooms. With kitchens becoming more timeless in style, oversized islands have become the new dining room and hoods now pieces of art and function. “Dramatic and energy-efficient lighting is huge,” added Bromstad. Green-friendly materials and an Asian influence in design will continue as trends. Even with an increase in conservative choices, spa-inspired bathrooms continue to be a trend and are becoming more like living quarters (see Trends on Page 44). Adding a cozy atmosphere, furniture-like pieces have integrated into today’s bathroom. —Chelsie Butler and Erinn Waldo As far as how to work with and gain the trust of the first four generations that already apply, Erickson stressed how each is vastly different and what kinds of things they respond to. Traditionalists, Erickson said, enjoy cooking and appreciate good kitchens. They respect the rules and want you to play by them. They are big on good manners, logical communication and face-to-face relationships. As money is their recognition for success, Baby Boomers would rather invest in their homes than move to a different location. They desire beautiful, functional homes, which are often multi-generation homes. Boomers appreciate positive feedback, appreciate community involvement and believe that winners choose winners. According to Erickson, money is still tight for the Gen Xers, but housing is important and they will spend money on remodeling. They are family oriented, and time spent with friends is important. Their kitchens are the hub for cooking, kid time and socializing. Bathrooms are important for taking care of child-care needs and 22 + K BB May/June 2013 / www.kbbonline.com / The Official Sponsor of KBIS www.kbis.com http://www.kbbonline.com http://www.kbis.com
