The previously purple-painted cabinets are now a dark-stained maple, and the white quartz countertops reflect more light throughout the space. Undercabinet and puck lighting create a dramatic effect. “I selected the white quartz because of the clients’ specifications, but also because it has a similar grain to that of marble at half the price and with three times the durability,” said Jaffe. “I am a huge proponent of quartz.” One “hiccup,” as Jaffe calls it — occurred when she had to take over as the contractor halfway through the job and reinstall the flooring. As a rule, she feels it’s important to know a little bit about everything when it comes to design, which came in handy in this instance. “If detailed attention is not paid when installing wood plank tile, many things can go wrong, including cupping — where some areas of the tile are higher than others,” she said. “We reinstalled the flooring with a commercial-grade, carbonized bamboo.” Because my clients have large dogs, they wanted a maintenance-free, durable flooring that could handle the pups’ nails. Jaffe also brought in her own electrician, plumber, tile and countertop installer, painter and cabinetmaker, which she said allowed her to have control over the quality of the installation. “I always think the designer should choose the cabinetmaker in a project.
