Before
The original kitchen was poorly
lit, isolated and inefficient – not to
mention that the cooktop exhaust fan
blew right back into the owner’s face.
The dropped portion of the ceiling allowed Yin to incorporate
recessed lighting, which now offers more flexibility. “Before, the kitchen
was illuminated only by harsh fluorescent bulbs. Now, the owner can
use recessed spotlights, under-cabinet lights and beautiful decorative
pendants to set light-level combinations for her comfort as dictated by
mood or task,” explained Yin, noting that the owner now uses her kitchen
for everything from cooking to jewelry making.
Yin further displayed her design wizardry by working around another
condo rule: no blocking the kitchen’s HVAC unit below the window (shown
with a fabric cover.) Not only could it not be blocked, but a perimeter for
access and repairs must also be maintained. To avoid wasting space,
Yin designed an L-shaped suspended countertop that passes in front of
the window and HVAC unit without blocking it. She incorporated a steel
support for strength, leaving the area below the countertop completely
open and easily accessible.

Besides beauty and convenience, safety played a large role in Yin’s
design. She selected an induction cooktop, since the unused portions of
the cooktop remain cool when not in use. It also includes an auto shut-off
function and rear knob controls beyond the reach of children. The floor
tiles have a matte no-slip finish, and countertops feature rounded corners.
Yin placed the microwave below the counter and dropped the upper
cabinets lower than the standard height so that everything is within easier
reach. Plus, all of the surfaces used in the kitchen are easy to clean.
“The conversion of the dark dungeon-like kitchen into an open
and airy room essentially transformed the entire feel of the home,”
said Yin. Enchanted by the new design, the owner now actually enjoys
spending her time there. “She sits by the window in the morning, has
tea and reads by sunlight,” added Yin. “It’s now a pleasant place to
spend her time surrounded by materials, colors and most of all the
people she loves.” ■
