wood bath cabinet.
The Light at the
End of the Hallway
Former bathroom space receives functional
layout and elegant, crisp materials

In the previous layout of this home in Austin, Texas, the first thing
guests would see while looking down the hallway into this bathroom was
the toilet, which is an obvious no-no in residential design. The hallway
leading to the bathroom was also fairly dark, so the new space was
designed to receive adequate natural light to brighten up and create
a more inviting environment, as well as offer a more attractive view into
the bathroom.
Because the bathroom is used by the homeowners as well as guests,

the client wanted a beautiful, spare, elegant and light-filled space that
catered to both. As the bathroom project is part of a larger renovation
that will soon take place in the ranch-style home, it had to set a precedent.
“The finishes and aesthetic selections were critical, as they will be
extrapolated at a later date to the remainder of the house,” said Gregory
Thomas, AIA, senior project architect with CG&S Design-Build. “As such,
trim details, color, wood species, hardware and stone selections took on
great importance.”
