The previous space had a bathing room with a toilet, sink and bathtub
in another room. This was rearranged to accommodate the large shower,
which is separated from the rest of the space by a large panel of fixed
glass. The toilet was repositioned against a wall with a pocket door.
“In the new scheme,” added Thomas, “even when you open the
bathroom door, you cannot see the toilet.”
Challenges, Solutions and Lessons Learned
According to Thomas, once the bathroom was all framed and ready
to layout, figuring out the tile pattern wasn’t easy because of its distinct
and varied graining, often on a diagonal. Whereas tile in a typical grid
pattern is often placed in a checkerboard-orienting horizontal and
vertical grain, the diagonal character of the grain of this particular tile
had to be discussed and decisions had to be made regarding how it was
to be oriented. It was important for the design team and the homeowner
to be on the same page where this was concerned because it was so
important visually to the project.
In this particular project, the client drove much of the design process,
and one challenge for Thomas was to make sure he helped her get to
where she needed to go.
“She would show me a photo, and then I would have to figure out
how to execute that in the bathroom,” he explained.“Not all designers are
happy doing things that way, but I was perfectly fine with it. In the end, it
was really a simple design that came down to details and execution.” n

The renovated bath is zoned such that
beautiful elements are visible, while
the toilet is tucked out of view around
the corner. The walls and floor are
finished with light-colored marble tile,
and the shower is graciously sized.
