ALL ABROAD the way, my customer's idea of European design was indeed the more modern one. There are some wonderful new products out there than can deliver a great European style, whichever style that may be. * For the Old-World style, I love KraftMaid's cabinetry in Cherry Vintage Onyx and Vintage Dove White - a perfect blend of traditional design with a simple black-and-white palette that delivers tradition with a twist. The current trend of mixing cabinet ﬁnishes and countertops continues. * For a more modern take on Euro-design, cabinetry in red from Kitchen Craft is mixed with a sleek, rich, wood-look laminate. Note also that a mixture of countertop ﬁnishes and heights is in this kitchen, as well as in the more traditional kitchen on the same page. * Mixing ﬁnishes continues in faucet design as well. Brizo's Vuelo singlehandle, high-arc, pullout kitchen faucet with SmartTouch Technology is a combination of a matte, cocoa bronze ﬁnish and stainless steel. If there was ever a faucet you can call sexy, this is it. Not only is it gorgeous, but its hands-free technology is great for saving water (and time) in the kitchen. While I'm still going on about sexy faucets, I wanted to also include Jason Wu's Odin design for Brizo, which is breathtaking. Finished in matte black The Suzani drum shade pendant light from Shades of Light (top); a sculptured hood from Zephyr (above); and Brizo's Vuelo single-handle, high-arc, pullout kitchen faucet (right) Scavolini's Crystal line of kitchen cabinetry with an articulated handle, this faucet is truly an art form. My prediction is that we'll be seeing a lot more of this black ﬁnish on plumbing ﬁxtures. * When it comes to ventilation, clean, sculptural hoods from Zephyr are offered in several sleek colors and also a couple of patterned ﬁnishes. The can be operated via remote control - something that's showing up in everything from range hoods to bathroom showering and bathing. And yes, even toilets! Patterned ﬁnishes are coming on strong, in everything from porcelain and ceramic tiles to cabinetry. * Cabinetry from Scavolini's Crystal line may not be for everyone, but it proves that what's next is going to be really different: a move away from 18 + K BB non-sustainable woods and ﬁnishes, coupled with the blending of living spaces open to kitchen spaces.This creates a new design aesthetic that's no longer just called a kitchen. It's a great opportunity to create a living space that's completely original and customized. * If you want something less patterned but that still falls under a more sustainable ﬁnish, try using one of the awesome laminates from Formica: textured woods, linen-like ﬁnishes and retro patterns abound. Formica's Charcoal Boomerang is an iconic pattern recolored for today's aesthetic. A great background with subtle color and texture and spots of bright color can be added as you please. * The use of pattern and color in the traditional-style bath or kitchen has also taken a turn. Although patterns are still running strong and bright, colors have never been more popular, and the designs are more streamlined and fresh. The Lantern mosaic pattern from Pratt & Larson is a colorful new take on a classic Old World pattern. * WAC'S Mirabel LED pendant light is a simple, traditional pendant light that would look great over an island or standing alone over a sink. Made to last, you might not ever change a light bulb again, and it comes in several ﬁnishes. * Drum shades continue to be a trend in lighting, with great possibilities for adding pattern and color. The Suzani drum shade pendant light from Shades of Light measures 12-in. x 16-in., and its pattern would look great in either a contemporary or traditional setting. As a green designer, I'd like to add one thing about any of the looks and products here. If at all possible, specifying products that are MADE IN AMERICA will not only boost our economy, but keeping things on this side of the pond will save on energy and carbon emissions.
