Integrated appliances hidden into cabinetry is still a strong trend because when walls come down, clients love the hidden appliances. As health becomes a bigger concern - especially for the younger generations - steam ovens are taking the place of microwaves because they are faster and provide better results. Microwaves in drawer versions will be speciﬁed more than built-in or over-the-range models. The beneﬁt here is that they can be designed and installed at an ergonomic height for kids or someone in a wheelchair. We will also see more water-saving appliances in the kitchen, such as dishwashers that already save water over hand washing. Touchless faucets will be a continuing trend, and I see this a lot with the younger generation as they look at the environment. What kinds of bathroom design trends will be prevalent in 2014? What's your outlook for the kitchen and bath remodeling market in 2014? The overwhelming KBIS 2014 attendance forecast is in itself an indication of the overall outlook for the new home and remodeling market. My business has had the best summer in a long time, which has resulted in a successful full installation schedule going into 2014. We will see a slow and steady recovery this year because there is a new housing market that is picking up - people are building new houses and selling their current homes. The whirlpool-style, large tub in master baths is disappearing, as it is a device many clients thought they would use and do not. As a result, there will be more space in the bathroom for larger, walk-in showers. I do believe that every home needs at least one tub for young kids or for those who are injured and can't stand up in a shower - it will hurt in resale if there is not one bathtub in a home. People will want more steam showers in 2014, as well, for their relaxing and healthy beneﬁts. Master baths are also becoming havens - a safe place to start and end your day. Coffee bars will be designed into the master suite to allow you to get up and turn on the coffeemaker without having to go to the kitchen. What factors do you see affecting growth in K&B remodeling in 2014? In our market, new home sales are picking up, which means people are leaving current inventory and putting their homes up for sale. Often times, those kitchens and baths need a renovation to accommodate the new homeowners. Even if they market their former house as having a "custom kitchen," this means the kitchen was customized for the previous owner and may not work for the new occupants, so it is time for them to renovate to get what they want out of their new kitchens and baths. What kinds of kitchen design trends do you foresee for 2014? Walls will continue to come down so that kitchens can open up to the great room or family room. We like to entertain around family, which becomes a challenge when you have a smaller, enclosed kitchen. Transitional-type design will be popular, as homeowners seek to ﬁnd their own style - it won't just be contemporary, Old World, European or traditional. For example, a square, raised panel door can be traditional if it is inset, but when you put it on a full-access box, it can lose some of its traditional look. Painted cabinetry will gain in popularity, and the appeal of quartz countertops will continue. Those manufacturers have gotten their process to a point where when you look at the product, you cannot tell the difference between granite and quartz. Because quartz can come in larger slabs, it has fewer seams and is nonporous, which means it doesn't require sealing. Stainless steel will be the main focus on appliance ﬁnishes, but I do see some companies beginning to introduce some new colors.
