fabric awnings feature an outdoor
fern pattern, and bamboo was
chosen for the flooring.
In every detail in the kitchen design one can get a glimpse of the
homeowner's roots.
"Spring in the mountains offers up new ferns on the forest floor, and this
fern detail was selected for the pattern on the fabric of the custom interior
awnings," added Larys. "The solid quartz countertops have the color and
appearance of crushed leaves along the paths of mountain trails, and
the stacked stone walls represent the material and solidity of the arches
and bridges found along the Blue Ridge Parkway."
Heartfelt Highlights
Standouts of the new kitchen design include LED-illuminated upper
cabinets that provide a showcase for the clients' cherished pieces, as
well as a handmade, antique wall/bar cabinet that took the place of
an existing doorway. Tin ceiling tiles combine actual vintage tins and Appalachian photographs taken from a book authored by the homeowner,
which include shots of a moonshiner, grandma shucking corn and children stirring apple butter.
One other highlight serves as a reminder of the kitchen being left unfinished for 10 years.
"On the upper corner of a slate wall, there appears to be some slate

missing," said Larys. "This 'never-finished space' allows the natural light
from the stair landing above to fill the corner of the room with the promise
of a one day 'final' completion."
Although Larys didn't have to stick to a tight budget,
she said she paid attention to not using anything exorbitant, which would have looked out of place in the house
anyway. One of the major costs of the redesign was the
Italian pendant lighting, which combines with cast-iron
cookware that hangs from an illuminated pot rack.
"A great lighting scheme will always add to the overall
success of your design," she added,"so keep lighting dollars
in your budget."
Green with Envy
Larys also believes in using sustainable materials and appliances whenever possible, so she selected a commercial
bamboo flooring product for its renewable qualities and used
a non-VOC, waterborne adhesive. The majority of the interior
paints were waterborne products, and two layers of LED lighting
were mixed with incandescent lighting.
