A charging station was incorporated into the countertop, which was manufactured by LG Hausys America. "Perhaps the best reuse of all was the incorporation of some existing cabinets reﬁnished to exactly match the new," she added. "The difference is imperceptible." Challenges Overcome The major challenge with this project was obvious: remaining faithful to the look and feel of the 1880 Victorian home located in a national historic district while incorporating contemporary functionality and lifestyle enhancements. Larys' client - a past director of the Center for Appalachian Studies at a major Southeastern university - worked with her to get the theme and character of the kitchen down to a science. "This wouldn't be a 'country' kitchen by any means but rather an expression of my client's Appalachian roots," said Larys. "An additional challenge was to include a number of artisan treasures that she had tucked away in boxes with hopes of one day putting them on display for herself and her guests." Larys developed the upper-level cabinets for those treasures, and then she had to tackle the non-existent ceiling with exposed joists and no lighting. She produced a detailed reﬂected ceiling plan to coordinate the new ceiling elements and the lighting. "The ceiling and lighting plans introduced architectural elements that borrowed from and enhanced the style of the house," she said. "Trimmed box beams solved structural issues, and multiple layers of lighting added to the feel and functionality of the kitchen. The different planes of the ceiling gave me an opportunity to ﬁt the lighting elements accordingly." While Larys says the occasional hiccup on an interior design project is inevitable, if you associate yourself with the best professional tradespeople in the business, things are bound to go well. She is slated to renovate the master bathroom in the same house later this year. "Now when they have a break from their busy schedules, the homeowners actually come home and have dinner in their house," said Larys.
