Meeting News - January 7, 2008 - (Page 32) Destination Insider: L.A. & The Beaches ‘Destination’ Resort To Open in Long Beach On 102 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and just 30 miles from Los Angeles, the Terranea Resort is on schedule for a 2009 opening. The $450million, Mediterranean-style resort, in Palos Verdes, is being developed by Los Angeles-based Lowe Hospitality Group, a division of Lowe Enterprises, which developed such resorts as the Resort at Squaw Creek, in Lake Tahoe, and the Sun River Resort, in Oregon. Lowe Enterprises’ Destination Hotels and Resorts manages those properties and will run Terranea. For meetings, the 582-room Terranea will offer 63,000 sf of indoor meeting and event space, including an 18,000-sf grand ballroom, two junior ballrooms, 16 breakout rooms, and three board rooms. There will be 75,000 sf of outdoor function spaces with ocean views. Upscale amenities will include the 25,000-sf oceanfront Spa at Terranea, which will have 24 treatment rooms, a fitness facility and yoga studio, and an outdoor lap pool. The latter is just one of several outdoor pools planned, including one perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific. A nine-hole golf course and training facility and a pair of casual and fine-dining restaurants will round out Terranea’s lineup. —Irene Korn At the 18th hole of the Ocean North course at Pelican Hill, the sun sets over the Pacific. Pelican Hill’s Golf Rollout The Pelican Hill Ocean North and Pelican Hill Ocean South golf courses, both part of the Resort at Pelican Hill, reopened in November, two years after they were closed to allow their original designer, Tom Fazio, to “re-perfect” the courses. Along with the courses, November saw the opening of the rest of the Pelican Hill Golf Club, including a Renaissance Period-flavored clubhouse, a prac- tice facility, and the Pelican Grill restaurant, with views of the Pacific Ocean and the golf courses. The rest of the 504-acre luxury resort, located between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, is slated to open in the fall, with 204 bungalow suites and rooms and 128 two-, three-, and four-bedroom villas; 20,000 sf of function space; a 23,000-sf spa; multiple dining options; and a circular pool inspired —Irene Korn by the Roman Coliseum. H Event Report Planner: ‘i’ Am Impressed By Newport Beach Users group of supply chain manager i2 Technologies enjoys beaches, weather; CVB provides first-class care The supply chain management company i2 Technologies has held its annual users group conference around the country, but it had never met on the West Coast until this November, when some 300 users gathered at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa for the three-day event. “The attendees really enjoyed the change of pace of meeting in California,” said Sharon Andersen, i2’s corporate meeting manager.“Newport Beach is a great destination with wonderful weather, and quite a few spouses attended. A lot of people rented cars and explored the beaches in their free time. The hotel is also very close to Fashion Island, which was popular with the attendees and their spouses.” Andersen said a key element in her destination choice was that Newport Beach “is a high-end destination that fit within our budget parameters.” To that end, she said,“The Marriott is a beautiful property, recently renovated and just spectacular for the price point.” Another selling point was the attention Andersen received from the Newport Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau. “The CVB did an excellent job of explaining Newport Beach and its various areas, along with all the things to see and do there,” said Andersen. “But what was most unusual is that it even came to our program at the hotel to make sure everything was going well. “The CVB was very concerned about following up with me during the meeting and afterwards, which is not something I’ve experienced before,”Andersen noted. “With 300 people, our group usually doesn’t warrant that kind of attention. I was very impressed.” —Irene Korn www.meetingnews.com Early birds grab front-row seats at a session in i2 Technologies’ users group conference at Newport Beach Marriott. 32 MeetingNews January 7, 2008 http://www.meetingnews.com
