Retail revival comes to Charlotte Charlotte’s retail shopping community is racing to keep up with the city’s expansion with a projected 1.2 million sf of stores due to open in Center City— the convention center area—over the next five years. The most innovative and prominent project is EpiCentre, a mixed-use retail, entertainment, and lodging complex opening this year. Sitting three blocks away from the Charlotte Convention Center, the 3.5-acre project is accessible from the center via the city’s new light rail system. Mike Butts, executive director of Visit Charlotte, said the project adds substantially to the city’s attractiveness as a meeting venue. “Just blocks from the Convention Center, EpiCentre combines an unexpected mix of restaurants, nightlife, and retail that meeting attendees can easily take advantage of,” he said. “This project truly showcases Charlotte’s smart city planning and steady progress.” EpiCentre covers an entire city block and has become a part of Charlotte’s skyline. The complex has a quality similar to New York City’s Times Square, with open plazas, pedestrian walkways connecting the complex’s five buildings, and plenty of neon. But EpiCentre is just the leading edge of the city’s retail boom. A task force determined that the city could support an additional 242,000 sf of retail establishments.“Retail is our next great opportunity,” said Michael Smith, president and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners, which is a promoter of downtown development. When complete, EpiCentre will include, a movie theater, a bowling alley, a residential tower, an office building, and a 176-room aloft hotel. Two buildings dedicated entirely to retail and entertainment will kick off the project’s opening in the coming months. The premier tenant will be the 14,000-sf Fox Sports Grill, associated with the Fox Sports Net—Section written by Renee Wright work.
