Insider Report: Gaming Keeping ’Em Coming Tunica ﬁghts to retain the meetings business it got from Hurricane Katrina As the Gulf Coast casinos destroyed by Hurricane Katrina come back on line, Tunica is at a crossroads. It welcomed groups displaced by the 2005 storm, and now it’s not anxious to give back that business. So, Tunica is taking a three-pronged approach to keep those groups. First, area casinos have followed through on their promises to honor contracts made with storm-damaged Gulf-area casinos. “Tunica put its money where its mouth is,” said Donna Murray, ofﬁce manager [and planner] at the Mississippi Tourism Association. Second, area casinos are renovating, while city tourism officials make sure planners hear about those efforts. “The Gulf Coast is hot and heavy to get people down there again,” said Anne Coggins, sales manager of meetings and conventions at the Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau. “But the only thing One of Tunica’s casinos on the mend, Gold Strike is undergoing a $10-million renovation. there right now is the casinos. Entertainment, dining, and recreation are still being rebuilt.” And third, Tunica is offering planners ﬂexibility. “A lot of groups used to go to the Coast just because that’s where the ﬂash was,” said Murray.“But today, groups realize they have a choice.
