International Manchester Central, the city’s convention center, will get more foyer space, new restaurants, and new meeting rooms. Manchester Adding Support Spaces to Convention Center Manchester, England—Manchester Central, the recently established new name for the Manchester International Convention Centre and surrounding complex, has announced renovation work that will give the venue improved pedestrian accessibility, more foyer and prefunction space, new restaurants, and new flexible meeting space. Began in February and scheduled to be finished by summer 2010, the work will be carried out over three phases to minimize disruption to scheduled events. “We want to increase [the venue’s] appeal to national and international events, opening up the facility to more people,” said Leslie Tomlinson, Manchester Central’s chief executive, in describing the impetus for the $40-million project. Phase I, which will be completed by year end, will create a new entrance to both Exchange Hall and Charter Suite. The second phase, slated to start this November and which will take a year to complete, will create a front foyer for the main Central Hall, complete with a restaurant. The last phase, from fall 2009 to summer 2010, involves the construction of an extension to the rear of Central Hall that will house breakout rooms for seminars and a new restaurant.
