Meeting News - April 21, 2008 - (Page 16) convention center showcase Albuquerque Convention Center new mexico A modern convention center and newly renovated hotels lure meeting groups to this colorful city. STAT CHECK ALBUQUERQUE CONVENTION CENTER Total Exhibit Space: 167,562 sf Largest Ballroom: 31,164 sf Meeting Rooms: 32 Largest Banquet: 7,178 (Northeast/Southeast Halls combined) Parking Spaces: 718 on site; several garages nearby Once made up of small pueblos and Spanish farms, Albuquerque is now one of the Southwest’s premier metropolitan centers. Its rich culture and history and its beautiful natural surroundings join with its modern accommodations and meeting facilities to make Albuquerque a unique destination for meetings and events. Comprised of two complexes under one roof, the three-level Albuquerque Convention Center features more than 600,000 square feet of total function space and 32 meeting rooms. The Northeast and Southeast Exhibit Halls can be combined to form a 106,200-square-foot columnfree exhibit area that holds 500 booths for a trade show and more than 7,000 people for a seated banquet. The West Complex houses the Northwest and Southwest Halls, each 30,131 square feet, and a 31,164-square-foot divisible ballroom that holds up to 2,400 delegates. General sessions and lectures can be held in the elegant Kiva Auditorium, which has tiered seating for 2,350 people. Albuquerque’s many accommodation options contain 16,000 guest units and range from major national chains to locally owned hotels, many of which capture the spirit and style of the Southwest. While all hotels are within a 15-minute drive of the convention center, there are more than 900 rooms in walking distance. The 295-room Doubletree Hotel Albuquerque, currently finishing up a multimillion-dollar renovation, is connected to the center via underground concourse. The Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, located directly across the street, boasts 395 rooms, almost 25,000 square feet of meeting space. The grand La Posada Hotel, an Albuquerque staple since the 1930s, will reopen in fall 2008 as the Andaluz after a $24 million refreshment and rebranding. Downtown Albuquerque has two main restaurant areas: the Art Deco-inspired Route 66/Central Avenue and the 4th Street Mall. Visitors can also venture to funky Nob Hill, with its boutique-style shopping or historic Old Town. Old Town, where the city was founded some 300 years ago, also offers picturesque adobe shops, galleries, and museums. All year round, duffers will enjoy the diversity of the area’s golf courses, from desert links to parkland to mountain courses, most with spectacular views of the plains, mountains, inactive volcanoes, or river valley.
