Meeting News - April 21, 2008 - (Page 17) convention center showcase Georgia International Convention Center college park, georgia Georgia’s newest convention center is also becoming a meetings industry pioneer. In early 2010, it will become one of the first facilities where attendees can get off the plane and go straight to the front door of the center without ever getting into a taxi, bus, or shuttle. This will be made possible by the new Automated People Mover (APM), a light rail train that will depart from HartsfieldJackson International Airport. The first stop along the route? The Georgia International Convention Center. More exciting news comes with the announcement that two full-service convention center hotels recently broke ground on the GICC campus. A 400-room headquarters hotel and a 150key, all-suite hotel are scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2010. Until then, meeting-goers can lay their heads at more than 8,000 accommodations within a mile of the center. Sitting on 49 acres of landscaped green space, the GICC is Georgia’s second-largest convention center with 400,000 total square feet of meeting and exhibit space. More than 35 specially commissioned works of art are spread throughout the center, creating a small gallery within its walls. The GICC houses the state’s largest ballroom, the 40,000-square-foot International Ballroom; 150,000 square feet of exhibit space; 90,000 square feet of prefunction areas; and 16,000 square feet for breakout sessions. There is also a 10,000-squarefoot culinary arts center featuring creative four-star cuisine from one of Atlanta’s finest chefs and concession areas throughout the center. For added convenience, all rooms and facilities are located on one level. The GICC is within walking distance of the stores and restaurants of College Park’s vibrant Main Street and adjacent to the new, $230 million mixeduse project being developed at the Gateway Cener. This 1.1 million-square-foot development, which includes the two new hotels, will add more than 75,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space to the area. Camp Creek Marketplace is also nearby, offering a wide selection of shopping and dining options. The GICC is just a 10-minute drive from downtown Atlanta and its many attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca Cola, the High Museum of Art, and the Botanical Gardens.
