Meeting News - April 21, 2008 - (Page 21) convention center showcase Norfolk Waterside Convention Connection Norfolk, Virginia is the ideal place for mixing business with pleasure. The city best known as the world’s largest naval base has been transformed into a compact meetings destination. Within a 10-square-block area, planners and attendees will find an interesting assortment of cultural, historical, and culinary diversions, along with 1,200 committable hotel rooms and 206,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space. Attractions such as The National Maritime Center, which includes Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin, and The MacArthur Memorial mix in with a hip restaurant and arts district and a blend of both funky and upscale shopping experiences. More restaurants are coming online regularly, increasing Norfolk’s already vast selection of eating options. Waterside Festival Marketplace on the Elizabeth River offers dining and nightlife. Colley Avenue and Historic Ghent offer al fresco eats, and Granby Street, Norfolk’s Restaurant Row, serves a variety of cuisines. The New York Times has called Norfolk’s downtown activity “a metamorphosis [that] has included its emergence as a cultural center of note,” referring to the city’s museums, high-profile annual cultural events, and critically acclaimed performing arts companies. Norfolk also has become a launching spot for cruises to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Canada/New England. Last spring brought the city’s Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center—a $36 million 80,000-square-foot cruise terminal and event space attached to The National Maritime Center. Among the meeting facility options is the “Waterside Convention Connection,” a joint marketing effort of the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside, Norfolk Waterside Convention Center, Norfolk Waterside Marriott, Radisson Hotel Norfolk, and the Waterside Festival Marketplace that together offer groups 121,000 square feet of meeting and function space. Also downtown, Scope Arena provides an additional 85,000 square feet of meeting space. Citywide, Norfolk offers a total of 5,200 guest rooms in a blend of boutique properties, bed-andbreakfast inns, and full-service hotels. Several are within minutes of Norfolk International Airport, which is served by more than 200 flights daily on a dozen major and regional airlines.
