Meeting News - April 21, 2008 - (Page 3) Perspectives On the Tarmac A few days before going to press with this issue of MeetingNews, I was stuck in Paris at Charles de Gaulle Airport, having just missed my Continental Airlines flight back to New York. Zut alors! as the French saying goes. At the time, I was saying other words in English that will not be published here. After my internal tantrum died down, I needed a moment to think about what to do next. I sat down in front of a large wall of windows looking out over the hustle and bustle of the airport. Outside, planes were lining up for takeoff, luggage handlers were throwing bags into stowage, catering trucks were zipping around with deliveries. Inside, long lines were forming at check-in counters for American Airlines. Delays, I thought to myself. If only I had been ticketed on American, maybe I would not have missed my flight. Au Contraire. It cost me a pretty penny to change my flight arrangements to the following morning and book accommodations for the night. But when I arrived at my hotel and hopped on the Internet, I discovered the magnitude of the situation at American: The carrier had shut down nearly 500 flights the previous day for additional FAA inspections and repairs. As of Friday, April 11, American had scrapped more than 3,000 flights. With the demise of three regional airlines in the first week of April and massive numbers of flight cancellations from several major carriers this month, airline troubles are writ large in this issue of MeetingNews. Senior Associate Editor Lori Morris covers both angles: Closing airlines Elizabeth West, loom in her cover story, “Crisis Among the Editor-In-Chief Carriers,” while FAA inspections and flight cancellations have kept her busy updating the Transportation beat (p. 10). MN will keep its finger on further developments. Check meetingnews.com for airline news as it breaks (I just received an e-mail notice that Frontier Airlines is filing for bankruptcy), and look for our May 5 issue for a follow-up feature about how this new wave of FAA inspections, airline safety concerns, and flight cancellations are affecting meeting planners.
