Meeting News - May 5, 2008 - (Page 19) Insider Report: Golf Meetings Edited by William Ng william.ng@nielsen.com Oregon Coast’s Bandon Dunes Rolling Out New Features At Bandon, OR’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort— home to three highly ranked Scottish and Irish links-style courses—a fourth course, Old Macdonald, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2010. Designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, the layout is a tribute to Charles Blair Macdonald, the founder of the United States Golf Association, who is recognized by many as the father of American golf course architecture. Set on 400 acres north and east of the resort’s Pacific Dunes course, the site is a sandy one with a long sand dune and some oceanfront property. The course will draw inspiration from Macdonald’s heralded design elements, such as dramatic ground features, wide fairways, and large rolling greens. Bandon Dunes’ other expansion elements include the upscale, 39-room Inn at Bandon Dunes, opening this summer and situated just south of 18th hole of the Bandon Dunes course. In addition, the temporary clubhouse at Pacific Dunes will be replaced with a permanent, two-story one late this fall that will have a larger pro shop, dining facilities, and panoramic views of Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, and the Pacific Ocean. Getting a New Owner, Grenelefe is Poised for a New Run Grenelefe Golf & Tennis Resort, in Haines City, FL, 30 minutes west of Orlando and once a prominent meeting venue for golf meetings, is poised to make a major comeback. Grenelefe was closed unceremoniously in 2002 and later purchased by time-share mogul David Siegel, who now is selling the property to Feltrim Developments, an international real estate development firm with offices in Orlando and Dublin, Ireland. Feltrim plans to invest $300 million for extensive redevelopment of the resort over the next 10 years. To be renamed Horizons at Grenelefe, it will feature a redesigned golf course by Arnold Palmer Design. Feltrim is also targeting refurbishments and additions to the 450 condominiums in the resort, updates to the 50,000-sf meeting facility, and the addition of a 250-room luxury hotel and spa. It also plans to create a 10,000-sf golf clubhouse, a 20,000sf fitness center, a marina with 34 slips, and a 100,000-sf village center with shops and restaurants. Orlando-based Arnold Palmer Design will begin planning of the golf course immediately, and the course is scheduled to be open by the end of summer 2009. Relaxed, comfortable, intimate.
