Destination Insider: Texas Through the Grapevine: A Gargantuan Gaylord Gaylord Texan gets approval to undergo major expansion work The Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center on Lake Grapevine recently announced plans to go ahead with a $315-million expansion that will add 500 guest rooms and 200,000 sf of meeting space to the property. The Gaylord Texan has not yet provided an exact timeline, except that it plans to complete the expansion by 2010. The resort is moving forward with the project after receiving city approval; however, groundbreaking is pending final approval by the Corps of Engineers, which owns part of the land that will be used for the expansion. The expansion plan includes a 12-story hotel tower containing the new guest rooms and meeting space that will extend from the existing resort structure. Upon completion, the resort will offer more than 2,000 guest rooms and 600,000 total sf of meeting and convention space, which will make it the largest hotel in the state of Texas. “The additional guest rooms and convention space will allow us to bring in more groups and larger groups that we haven’t been able to host in the past,” said Martha Neibling, spokeswoman for the Gaylord Texan. “The plans were driven by demand. We were turning away a great amount of convention business just because of our size limitations,” added Neibling. The Gaylord Texan Resort currently has 1,511 guestrooms and 400,000 sf of meeting and convention space. The size of Gaylord’s expanded Texas property will nearly match the size of its Nashville property, the Gaylord Opryland, and allow larger meetings and conventions to book multi-year commitments that rotate between Gaylord properties.
