People Making News Philly ‘Phanatical’ Over Christine Duffy Acquisition to CVB Board of Directors In June, Christine Duffy, corporate meetings expert, joined the Philadelphia CVB’s board of directors, saying, “I hope that my experience and expertise in the meetings industry will help bring business to the great city of Philadelphia.” Duffy is currently president and CEO of Maritz Travel, one of the largest meeting, event, and incentive travel management companies in the world; she had served as president and COO of McGettigan Partners (where she increased sales by more than 154 percent between 1996 and 2001) before the company was acquired by Maritz Travel in November 2001. Duffy is an expert in trends in the meetings and incentives industry, as well as meetings effectiveness, outsourcing, and strategic meetings management. She has served on the Meeting Professionals International’s (MPI) board of directors for six years and was appointed chairwoman from 2005 to 2006. She founded MPI’s Women’s Leadership Initiative and has been a regular supporter of women’s leadership in the industry. Estep (WA). s In June, Kathy Ehlman became the Northern Kentucky CVB’s sales manager for the Kentucky state association and corporate markets. Ehlman has been a successful performer in the local hospitality market, most recently serving as senior sales manager at the Westin Cincinnati, where she won the Platinum award representing the top 5 percent of achievers covering more than 700 properties. Previously, Ehlman served as an instructor at the Tri-State Travel School in Cincinnati, and as a travel agent for the American Automobile Association. Bureau VP of sales and marketing Barbara Dozier stated that Ehlman will be an asset in her latest role. “Kathy has a results-driven record of achievement. Her ability to combine solid business decisions and strong client relationships makes her a great team member.” s On July 1, Tracy Kimberlin marked his 20th year of service as Springﬁeld, MO, CVB’s president. Kimberlin has overseen two decades of change; when he ﬁrst joined, the budget was about $400,000 and the bureau employed ﬁve people. The bureau’s budget now is nearly $3.4 million, and it employs 17 full-time and four parttime staff. In 1994, Kimberlin was inducted into the Missouri Travel and Tourism Hall of Fame for crafting legislation establishing a funding mechanism for the Missouri Division of Tourism, a model adopted by other states seeking to increase funding for tourism promotion. r Industry Veteran Charles Bass Passes The industry mourns Charles S. Bass, 78, who passed away on June 28. Bass began his hotel career in 1956 at the former De Witt Clinton Hotel in Albany, NY. His career spanned New York and Miami Beach, (Queensbury Hotel, Glens Falls, NY; the Roney Plaza Hotel and Hotel Fontainebleau Miami Beach). In 1978, he became senior VP of the Dallas CVB, where he stayed for nine years and became its executive VP before returning to hotels as director of sales and marketing at the Village of Breckenridge Resort in Breckenridge, CO.
