Inside the Meetings Industry Industr y Event Focuses on Women’s Leadership Issues Speakers tackle topics from salary concerns to community care programs Rosemont, IL—On Nov. 13, more than 180 attendees came to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare for the second annual Women’s Leadership Conference, sponsored by the Chicago-area chapter of Meeting Professionals International. The full-day conference addressed issues facing women leaders, as well as concerns of women who are on track to assume leadership roles. Geared toward part-time and fulltime meeting planners, plus business owners, association executives, and meetings industry suppliers, the conference kicked off with a series of breakout sessions focused on personal and professional topics. Julia Auburg, first vice president– investments, UBS Financial Services, presented strategies for earning more money and managing personal finances. Karen Malone, vice president of meeting services, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, discussed strategies for professional success. Margaret Stender, general manager of the Chicago Sky women’s professional basketball team, addressed ways to give back to the community, while Susan Morris, a former conference-center executive and now principal of the New Height Group, spoke on finding work-life balance. To conclude the day, a panel of past MPI chairwomen shared leadership strategies and successes from their personal and professional lives. The event also featured the Connection Place, a special exhibit area showcasing women-focused products and services. A third-annual Women’s Leadership Conference is expected to take place in Chicago next November. H —Section written by Robert Carey 10 MeetingNews December 17, 2007 Social Scene Tom Watson & The Honors Squad MCCA’S MAJOR MILESTONE: The Massachusetts Convention Center celebrated the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center’s eclipse of 1 million hosted attendees with the group that did it, the 2007 annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology/ Association of Rheumatology Health Professional. From left to right are MCCA Executive Director James Rooney, American College of Rheumatology President Dr. Neal Birnbaum, and Executive Vice President Mark Andrejeski. The BCEC opened in 2004 and has been a hit facility with conventions and large groups. GREENBRIER HONORS ITS OWN: The venerable Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, recently invited 600 of its active and retired former employees to a lavish dinner in honor of their years of dedicated service. Women in attendance were given charm bracelets, while men received Raymond Weil watches. GM Michael Gordon commented: “The service we deliver is all due to our dedicated employees who have a longstanding devotion to the Greenbrier.” TOM WATSON DROPS IN: Renowned golfer Tom Watson visited Associated Luxury Hotels International’s Luxury Lane area at the Motivation Show in Chicago. Watson was there to represent the Greenbrier resort, which is a member of ALHI’s portfolio of properties.
