Up until now, the Handbook has been a stand-alone publication that was delivered with the August issue. The writing of it was assigned to industry professionals, who turned in sound educational segments and checklists that covered the nuts-andbolts of meeting planning. Last year, a decision was made to fold the Handbook into the main issue. Having it now so close to our regular content revealed a flaw in our previous editorial thinking—that you, the readers of MeetingNews, needed to be reminded of the basics! In pondering the problem of how to deliver a Handbook that was as sophisticated as the planners who read it, we pored over past issues and discovered the answer. In two of our columns, Meetings Marketplace and Live from the Forum, real meeting planners pose real planning problems and present possible solutions. Terri Hardin, These columns represent two of today’s most Editor-In-Chief popular cultural trends—the “reality” rage and the social media phenomenon, where content is dictated by the reader. Combined with a little legal advice from sister magazine Successful Meetings’ law columnist Ben Tesdahl, Esq., they comprise the basis for the 2008 Meeting Planners Handbook: Real Life Lessons. I’m sure the issues presented in the Handbook make up only the tip of the iceberg of complexities that you face each day.
