People Making News—Associations Edition Susan Sarfati Retires, Takes up New Challenge At ASAE & The Center’s Annual Meeting in San Diego, Aug. 16-21, Susan Sarfati, CAE, former founding president and CEO of The Center for Association Leadership and Executive Vice President of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), formally said goodbye, and announced that she would be joining the American Program Bureau (APB) as its Executive Vice President. Sarfati will be heading the new Washington DC office, where she will be spearheading efforts to reach out to associations, corporations, universities and public forums worldwide. “Susan Sarfati is one of the premier leaders in the association community,” said Robert P. Walker, Founder, Chairman and CEO of APB. “She will play a strategic role in our expansion. In addition to her duties at APB, Sarfati has also launched Beyond Excellent, a speaking and consultation business. Officer, Community and Member Services, National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Fellows are called upon to serve ASAE & The Center in a variety of individual ways—as content leaders, facilitators and mentors for the Future Beth W. Palys Leaders Conference, authors of books, articles, and leaders in the organizations. Also Announced at ASAE ASAE & The Center’s Diversity Executive Leadership Program (DELP) 2008-2009 Scholars DELP helps individuals from underrepresented segments of the association community advance into leadership in the association profession. Its scholars participate in a leadership program of education and volunteer service. This year’s scholars are: Eloiza Altoro-Acevedo, Executive Director, Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC); Mariama S. Boney, Director of Member InitiativesState and Intl., ACPA, College Students Educators, International; Shawn E. Boynes, Senior Director of Education, APIC-Assn for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology; Michelle R. Harris, Director, Conferences & Member Services, Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA); Alison E. Heron, Director, Membership & Corporate Relations, National Child Support Enforcement Association; Arthur Hsieh, COO, San Francisco Paramedic Association; Stefanie Reeves, Director, Political Advocacy American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association; Pamala M. Silas, Executive Director, American Indian Science & Engineering Society, Steven Stout, Director of Meetings & Special Events, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals; Bana Qashu Yahnke, CMP, Director, Communication & Marketing Family, Career and Community, Leaders of America, Inc. ASAE & The Center’s 2008 Association Leadership Class of Fellows. The Fellows, which is a recognition program of service to the profession and a call to future service, was begun in 1986. It now has more than 200 members, including Gregg B. Balko, CAE, Executive Director, Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering; Cedric Calhoun, CAE, Executive Director, Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers, Inc.; Bill Grusich, CMP, President, Hinton + Grusich; Leslie D. Mancuso, PhD, RN, FAAN, President and CEO, JHPIEGO, an affiliate of The Johns Hopkins University; Beth W. Palys, CAE, President, Management Solutions Plus, Inc.; William F. Reed, CMP, SVP, Strategic Sales, Experient; Jeffrey N. Shields, CAE, VP and Chief Planning s Dave Fellers, executive director, Radiological Society of North America became the 159th recipient of the Key Award—ASAE & The Center’s highest honor bestowed upon association chief staff executives. The Key Award recognizes executives who demonstrate exceptional qualities of leadership in their own organizations and an exemplary commitment to the association management profession. Fellers has served as executive director of Radiological Society of North America since 2001. Prior to that, he was executive director of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Most recently, he served on ASAE & The Center’s Key Professional Associations Committee as chair and vice chair. s Christie Hicks, senior vice president, Starwood Hotels and Resorts became the 21st recipient of the Academy of Leaders Award—ASAE & The Center’s highest honor given to industry partners who have demonstrated exemplary support of ASAE & The Center and the entire association community. Since 1999, Hicks has worked at Starwood Hotels and Resorts, first as vice president of global sales promoted to senior vice president. Prior to that, she was vice president of national sales with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. s David Noonan (pictured on p. 12), deputy executive vice president, American Academy of Ophthalmology, became the second recipient of ASAE & The Center’s Professional Performance Award, which recognized invaluable contributions made by association executives who are at the top-level within their organizations but are not CEOs. He has served as deputy executive vice president for the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1972 and has been a member of ASAE & The Center for 26 years.
