Hotels & Resorts Gaylord Puts Down Stakes in the Southwest Gaylord Entertainment said earlier this month that it contributed to a land purchase in Mesa, AZ, in order to develop a resort and convention hotel at the area known as the Mesa Proving Grounds. Approximately 30 miles from downtown Phoenix, adjacent to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and a 25-minute drive to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Mesa Proving Grounds totals 3,200 acres; Gaylord purchased 100 of them. Specific details regarding the size and budget of the project have not been determined. National research organizations have concluded that Mesa is one of the highest-growth areas in the country, according to a statement By Rayna Katz by the company. “We’re extremely excited by the prospects of a Gaylord property at the Mesa Proving Grounds, which will become one of the most sought-after tourist and business travel destinations in the U.S. and a top choice by meeting planners for conventions,” said Colin V. Reed, chairman and CEO of Gaylord Entertainment. The development will create an urban environment, including the Gaylord property, retail, and a golf course designed by Tom Fazio. The Gaylord project is contingent on future negotiations and final approval by Gaylord’s board of directors. A Midwest Property Introduces a Unique and Very Environment-Friendly Meetings and Events Venue The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, in Logan, OH, announced earlier this month that it has broken ground on an innovative meeting and events facility. Surrounded by the caves, forests, and waterfalls of southeastern Ohio’s Hocking Hills region, the 5,000-sf Gathering Place will feature an open layout and space for groups of up to 50 people. It will feature views of Hocking Hills and natural light filtering into its 857-sf meeting room. Located in an 1840s log cabin, the facility will also include a 450sf windowed breakout area and a 1,000-sf rooftop garden with a covered, wraparound porch providing additional space for events. A number of green features will be a part of the Gathering Place. One-third of the building will sit underground for more energy-efficient heating and cooling, there will be high-energy windows and doors, tankless hot water heaters will offer hot water on demand in meeting spaces, the kitchen, and spa, and much more. The Gathering Place will offer full-service dining for every meal and break, and the inn’s event planners will create and facilitate team-building activities such as hikes, zipline canopy tours, spa treatments, cooking and wellness classes, wine and beer tastings, rappelling/rock climbing, kayaking/canoeing, and skeet-shooting. Disneyland Makes the Booking Process Happier for Planners and Attendees Managing room blocks just became easier for meeting organizers bringing groups to Disneyland Resort, as did trip planning for attendees. The park and hotel complex has added access to the Passkey online reservation system in the package of services it offers meeting buyers. Upon booking a program, group customers will be provided with a unique URL from which they can manage room Paradise Pier Hotel, Disneyland Resort blocks and track reservations in real time. Planners can forward the link to meeting attendees for them to start the hotel reservation process and purchase exclusive theme park tickets. The sites will feature information on the event and the hotel. Also, users are a few clicks away from information about dining and retail options, theme park hours, and Disney special events and services previews. “Our goal with this online suite was to create the best of both worlds,” said Robert Donahue, director of resort sales and services at Disneyland Resort. “The hotel reservation capability brings time-saving convenience to planners and attendees, while the other features ensure that attendees can take advantage of what the Disneyland Resort offers.” Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls has 12 one-bedroom cottages. 12 MeetingNews September 22, 2008
