Meeting News - October 20, 2008 - (Page 52) Insider Report: Gaming MGM Mirage Continues Lineup Rework Following 2007’s $150 million guest room redesign at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, the revamp of both the spa and convention floor at the New York-New York Resort Casino, and various remodeling projects at Monte Carlo Resort & Casino, MGM Mirage moved on to substantial renovations and additions at its other properties this year—and it’s still going. January brought the arrival of the new 92,000sf Marquee Ballroom adjacent to the MGM Grand Convention Center. In February, Bellagio completed a $60 million redesign of the Bellagio Tower, with seven types of suites. Each of the 512 guest units now has dark woods and a rich, natural color palette, as well as high-tech amenities, and contemporary art. In August, the Mirage finished its 3,044 guest room renovation, with a design featuring new color schemes, cool metals, and warm woods. Rooms now sport pillow-top mattresses, cordless phones, ergonomic office chairs, and media hubs that allow computers and portable gadgets to be plugged into 42-inch LCD televisions. And, by the end of next year, a guest room redesign under way at the Excalibur will give all 2,000 accommodations a modern take on the casino resort’s classic medieval castle theme. continued from page 48 Las Vegas is underwriting a referendum for a $100 million casino project—to Miami, where a developer is seeking an amendment to the Florida constitution in order to add a Vegas-style venue at the Fontainebleau resort and two other sites. Philly Developers Are Facing Resistance Foxwoods Development Co. recently announced its intention to pursue a new site for its Philadelphia casino: a downtown mall called the Gallery at Market East. Originally, plans called for a $986 million, three-phase investment on the South Philadelphia waterfront, starting with a casino with 3,000 slot machines and a 2,000-seat showroom and eventually including a 500-room hotel and 120,000 sf of meeting and conference space. Facing neighborhood opposition, the project’s movement has been slow. The Delaware River waterfront is the site of another proposed project, the SugarHouse Casino at the former Jack Frost Sugar Refinery. The $550 million proposal includes a casino with 3,000 slot machines, retail and dining establishments, a parking garage, and future plans for a 500-room hotel and a 30,000-sf events center. SugarHouse is currently entangled in negotiations and lawsuits, however. “SEE THIS SHOW!” Customized Service NEW YORK BOSTON – E!
