We sell the the Beau Rivage, and we sell our meeting space. The renovated center will certainly help us out when it comes to large citywides. —Interview by Amy Cates Plug Gets Pulled On the Gaylord California Project For the second—and likely last— time, Gaylord Entertainment has killed its West Coast project. Set for Chula Vista, CA, near San Diego, the $1 billion hotel/convention center was to have 1,500 rooms and 400,000 sf of meeting space. But battles over labor and environmental issues, plus high construction costs and difficult dealings with the landowner, the Port of San Diego, proved too much for Gaylord, according to Colin V. Reed, chairman and CEO. “We are disappointed to make this decision since the San Diego region is an important convention market,” he said.“But this project became increasingly complicated.” Nashville-based Gaylord first quit Chula Vista in August 2007 on similar issues but later revived it. Meanwhile, Gaylord did secure a presence in the West with the September purchase of 100 acres of land in Mesa, AZ, for a resort/convention center complex. A A New Adventure Awaits in Paradise The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, HI, has added an off-site hike to its spa menu. Led by a wellness consultant, the 3.5-mile upslope Hualalai Hike goes to Puhiapele, a 300-foot-high cone on the northwestern slope of Hualalai volcano. Puhiapele’s last lava flow, in 1800 to 1801, reached the shoreline north of Keahole Point (now the location of Kona International Airport at Keahole). The hike traverses through dryland forests, through elevations between 1,300 and 1,600 feet, and into a large lava tube where hikers use headlamps and flashlights. Participants learn a bit of history, geography, botany, culture, and legends along the way. The guided hike takes approximately 2.5 hours, including travel time. Cost is $300 for one to three persons; each additional person is $105. Water and snacks are included. The Four Seasons resort has 243 guest rooms along with 43,819 sf of meeting space.
