The Australian-born Barnett brings more than 15 years of hospitality experience to his post. Prior, Barnett served as the director of sales and marketing for the Jumeirah Carlton Tower and its sister property, the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, both in London. I Patrick Blangy has been appointed director of sales and marketing at Taj Boston. He is now responsible for the marketing, reservations, sales, and public relations strategies of the hotel, managing a staff of 25. The Beantown luxury hotel is at the landmark location of Newbury and Arlington streets, adjacent to Public Garden. Blangy previously was director of marketing and sales for Orient-Express Hotels and a corporate director with Renaissance Hotels. I The California Society of Association Executives named Hillary Burton, senior convention sales manager for the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, its “2008 Associate of the Year.” Burton has been with the CVB for five years and currently oversees the state association market. She has worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years and has been active with CalSAE and Meeting ProfessionaIs International. She was given the 2005-06 Chapter Leader Award by the MPI Sacramento/Sierra Nevada Chapter, as well as the 2006-07 Supplier of the Year award. I Mark Jeffrey was named GM of the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott resort in Miami. For the past seven years, Jeffrey was GM of the Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa in Lexington, KY, where he grew sales by 50 percent, oversaw a $12.5 million renovation, and was recognized with the regional Marriott GM Sales Leadership Award (2006-07) and the Marriott Hotels & Resorts GM Sales Leadership Award (2004). I Christy Nauta has joined the Spokane Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau as a convention sales manager. She previously worked for the Red Lion Spokane Valley, now the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center, for eight years. Also, Melissa Coen joined the CVB as convention services and housing coordinator. Coen was previously the sales assistant at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park. I Leonard S. Czarnecki has been appointed GM of the new Fairmont Pittsburgh, which is expected to open this fall. He will bring more than 18 years of experience. Czarnecki was previously hotel manager at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, where he directed the operations of one of the city’s most prominent hotels. While in Boston, he was active in the Massachusetts Lodging Committee’s education committee. I Scott Ostrander has taken the helm of the Warwick Denver Hotel as GM, as it prepares to unveil the final phase of its multi-year, $25 million hotel-wide renovation in the first quarter of this year. As GM, Ostrander is in charge of operations of both the hotel and its award-winning restaurant, Randolph’s Restaurant & Bar. “We are pleased to bring such an experienced hotelier to Warwick Denver Hotel,” said G. Paul LeBlanc, marketing and sales VP of Warwick International Hotels. “We’re confident he will bring even greater success to Warwick Denver and be instrumental in elevating service that will complement the enhanced facilities.” I Earlier this month, Nigel Roberts was appointed president of the $2.7 billion Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, which is expected to debut later this year. Roberts will help open the property and handle various operational functions. Prior to his new position, Roberts was senior vice president of operations at Langham Hotels International. I Brian Lynx is now director of sales and marketing of the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui. Prior to his new position, Lynx worked at such properties as Fairmont Kea Lani (Maui), Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (Big Island), and Starwood’s Westin Maui Resort & Spa as sales and marketing director. Lynx also oversaw, as area director, the six Starwood properties in Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, including the St. Regis Bora Bora’s opening. H February 16, 2009 MeetingNews 9 Shout Outs I In January, William Courtney Lowe became regional vice president of sales and marketing for Houston-based Benchmark Hospitality. Lowe, who now oversees sales and marketing programming for the company’s East Coast properties, was previously the highly successful director of sales and marketing for the Bedford Springs Resort, the historically important property located in central Pennsylvania, as well as acting GM of the Equinox Resort & Spa in Manchester Village, VT. I Kerrie Van Sickle has joined Branson, MO’s Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center as sales manager. Van Sickle is responsible for coordinating meetings, incentive programs, and conventions at the resort for groups in the eastern U.S. as well as the St. Louis area. A 15-year hospitality industry veteran, Van Sickle previously held sales positions at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, MO; Silverado Resort in Napa, CA; and Adam’s Mark Hotel in Kansas City. She is a member of Meeting Professionals International. I Simon Barnett was appointed director of sales and marketing of New York City’s famed Jumeirah Essex House in January.
