South Regional By Matt Alderton Developer Buys Knoxville Holiday Inn, Plans Renovations Local real estate developer Nick Cazana has purchased a prominent hotel in downtown Knoxville, Tenn., which he began renovating Jan. 4, he announced this month. The hotel, a 293-room Holiday Inn Select that’s adjacent to Knoxville’s World’s Fair Park near the Knoxville Convention Center, was built in 1982 in conjunction with that year’s World’s Fair in the city. Cazana purchased it from its builder, Chattanooga developer Franklin Haney, who has been the target of frequent criticism from city leaders for his stewardship of the building, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. “This property is just too important to downtown and Knoxville as a whole to let it sit in its current condition,” Cazana said in a statement. “Improving this hotel helps tourism, the convention center and the city itself.” Extensive renovations on the hotel, which has eight meeting rooms with approximately 5,802 square feet of meeting space, began this month and are expected to be complete in 2012, Cazana said. “This hotel was state-of-the- Knoxville’s Sunsphere overlooks the recently sold Holiday Inn art when it was built for the World’s Fair, and we want to return it to the drastically improve the accommodations and same level of service,” he said. “We are going to the expectations for hotels in Knoxville.” ❍ meet where there’s plenty to do and plenty of room to do it meet where the mood takes you and the parking is free meet in state-of-the-art facilities or in a more natural state meet in the middle, or on the water, or on the path meet your objectives in Augusta.
