financing in developing nations. Thirty-one financial institutions have adopted the principles since 2003. Labels count While known mainly as a great consumer-marketing tool, eco-labeling is also effective for business-tobusiness commerce. Both hotels use third-party accreditation as a way to qualify suppliers and solicit new business: Scandic’s recent certification by the prestigious Nordic Swan label for all its properties in Sweden and Norway has resulted in significant new corporate business. Push suppliers For the most part, rather than seeking specifically “green” vendors, the hotels have asked more of their current suppliers to specify or develop products that are earth friendly. Scandic requires vendors to sign a suppliers’ declaration, ensuring that partners are aware of and striving toward the use of renewable materials and biodegradable substances. Dux (beds), Lux (liquid soaps) and Philips (TV sets) are three companies whose eco-labeled products have successfully met the hotel’s standards. Train, train, train Bergkvist reports staff education as the single most important factor of success with a green program; Scandic provides training for every new employee and ongoing staff education through online courses that are also being implemented at Hilton International. The Natural Step, an international advisory and research organization, has been instrumental in helping Scandic develop their program. “People want to do the right thing, Bergkvist says. “If you give them the information, they will.” Rezidor SAS has also made education a priority, as a key element in the company’s first phase of its Responsible Business (RB) Program. More than 60% of the company’s staff has received training about the impacts of the hospitality industry and what actions they can take. Localize programs Rezidor SAS operates in 47 countries. By developing a list of 12 objectives – rather than a checklist of requirements – it allows each property to develop an action plan that works best for them, given market demands and constraints. The General Manager works with an RB coordinator at the hotel level, with the support of a regional structure that interfaces with the Heidenmark-Cook’s team. “So, in Scandinavia, for example, efforts focus more on waste separation whereas in the Middle East it’s more about charitable assistance,” she explains. Scandic similarly requires “specific and detailed” action plans be developed by each of is hotels, and reserves space in employee areas at each property to report its success.
