Data ports, high-speed internet connections, Wi Fi, smart mini-bars, safes and self-service check-in kiosks may be necessary, but hardly a way to enhance a hotel’s ambience. As product manufacturers and designers, we constantly seek ways to create unique and interesting spaces for guests. These days, there are technology solutions on the market that can help add sex appeal along with functionality. Vanity 2.0 At the Sofitel in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills-based Cheryl Rowley Design (www.cherylrowleydesign .com) used technology to modernize its interpretation of “Hollywood Glamour” in all its extravagance, sophistication and luxury. Part of the solution was privacy glass, often used for commercial industrial purposes, but reinvented here as a way to integrate the bedroom and bathroom experience. Switched off, the glass is a beautiful piece of artwork crowning the bed with an elegant floral pattern. Switched on, the glass becomes transparent, allowing the guest to shower while watching television or taking in the spectacular panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills. Also used in the Sofitel are integrated lighting and mirrors from Electric Mirror, based in Seattle (www.electricmirror.com). The Lighting Station product merges color correcting lamps that simulate natural light into the mirror itself.
