88th annual neocon world’s trade fair The 38th annual NeoCon World’s Trade Fair, North America’s largest conference and exhibition for interior design and facilities management was held June 12-14 at The Merchandise Mart Chicago. Total attendance for the NeoCon 2006 show was approximately 50,493, an increase of more than 15% from 2005. In addition, this year’s NeoCon offered more products, more categories, and 50 more exhibitors than last year. Thousands of the latest and greatest interiors products from more than 1,200 exhibiting companies and permanent showrooms were displayed in more than 1.2 million square feet of exhibit space. The line-up of keynote speakers included: world-famous designer Ron Arad; recent Interior Design 2005 Hall of Fame inductee Clive Wilkinson; and, Vicente Wolf, one of the 10 most influential designers as named by House Beautiful. The Best of NeoCon Awards entries reached a record high with 332 products entered in 36 categories. Seventy-nine awards were distributed, including 12 Innovation Awards, 3 Editors’ Choice Awards and a Best of Competition Award. NeoCon jury is composed of 54 corporate, government and institutional facilities management executives, interior designers and architects who are responsible for selecting and buying furniture and furnishings for their specific organizations or clients. The Furniture Systems Category took top prize as the Best of Competition with My Studio Environments, manufactured by Herman Miller and designed by Douglas Ball. Sponsored by Contract Magazine, the Best of G2E institute and red rocks casino resort and spa The inaugural G2E Institute was held this year at the newly opened Stations Red Rocks Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 9-11. The organizers of the Global Expo combined the existing G2E Casino Design with the Gaming and Technology Conference. The combined workshop-style educational format enhanced networking between attendees and industry experts, along with ongoing continuing tabletop displays and sponsor booths. The AGA and Reed Exhibitions choose an excellent property this year, allowing all in attendance to review the global direction of current trends in design, architecture, construction, technology and development. Courtney Miller, show manager and industry vice president of G2E at Reed Exhibitions shares: 24 “The unique value of this conference is that it offers in-depth analysis of specialized industry sectors as well as a broader examination of how interactions and synergies between these key areas will affect the industry now and in the future.” As this country is “picking up the pieces” from natural disasters globally, the industry could not be moving at a faster pace with new building and restorationve projects. The ongoing workshops this year shared a cross-section of all venues: Heroes of the Gulf Coast, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway to the creators of the Red Rocks Casino Resort and Spa, Stations Casino. The workshops allowed a greater understanding of the ways each industry sector influences another, and how this knowledge will drive growth and ensure the success of each enterprise. This year’s luncheon honored Joel Bergman, AIA President of Bergman Walls, with the Sarno Lifetime Achievement Award for Casino Design.
