The challenge Located on the famous Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Wyndham’s Las Cascada Resort is located minutes from the site of the Alamo dating back to 1836 and is amidst the restaurants and shops that line the energetic pedestrian walkway. For the new build (named after its location where the water falls 15 feet below to the San Antonio River that runs behind the resort), Trisha Poole of Melbourne, Florida-based Design Poole had to create a resort product that “would appeal to a young demographic but have a lasting traditional appeal that reflected the Spanish heritage of the downtown San Antonio area,” she says, adding that since it was a vacation ownership product, it had to have a residential design that held up in a commercial environment. “It is always a challenge to create the fresh design that can stand the test of time.” The solution In the public areas, she and her staff used contemporary furniture, a warm natural color palette accented with pops of crimson and red, and organic, flowing fabrics. Carpet patterns include “medallion” shapes commonly utilized in ironwork at window openings of the old missions of San Antonio, while the sweeping shapes found on fabric, furniture, and material transitions are a nod to the river. Upstairs in the rooms, living areas boast a mix of traditional Spanish furnishings contrasted with modern accents of artwork, accessories, and drapery treatments. And in the master bedroom, rich, traditional casegoods are set against a bold urban color scheme. But the design wasn’t the only challenge. Among them: cost constraints applied to the expansive square footage in the public spaces and high construction costs eliminated a planned mezzanine. “The budget of the project truly challenged the design staff’s creativity,” Poole says. “We worked with expensive materials in exclusive ways to communicate quality and balanced with savings in other areas that would really add up.” s 24 march 2009 www.newh.org tel 800.593.NEWH http://www.newh.org
