The NEWH Leadership Conference goes green
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, the semi-annual NEWH Leadership Conference (held in San Diego in January) devoted a
full day of programming to green design.
The day kicked off with a rousing discussion on what it really means to be green with the Sustainability: the
Vision of Pioneers panel. Moderated by David Mahood, Olive Designs, the panelists included Charlotte Black Elk,
an environmental activist and leader in Native American rights; and Barbara Filippone, founder, owner, and
president of EnviroTextiles, a hemp textile company located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. “Since this was about
inspiring others and social impact, I wanted people with decades of experience in promoting change,” Mahood
explains.
The day continued with a LEED 101 Workshop, where NEWH Sustainable Hospitality invited the USGBC to
educate attendees on the LEED rating system, as well as discuss how LEED will impact the hospitality industry.
Then Cliff Tuttle, senior vice president of ForrestPerkins’ San Francisco office, and Gary Golla, an associate with
Portland-based Sera Architects, presented a case study on the newly opened, groundbreaking hotel, the Nines in
Portland, Oregon, expected to achieve LEED Silver certification (for more, see page 30). And the day ended
with Bill Gregory, Milliken’s director of sustainability, who discussed where sustainability is going, how it is
continually changing, and encouraging people to stay involved.
“Our sustainability discussion connected many of the disciplines represented with our diverse NEWH
membership, and judging by the
reaction of the audience, we succeeded

Hospitality Design’s Green Day is May 13th
says Mahood. s
It’s back. Hospitality Design (HD) magazine will host its annual Green
Day May 13th. Held in conjunction with the Hospitality Design
Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas, the full day of
conference programming dedicated to sustainable design is designed
to spark creativity, solutions, and action. And its five accredited hours
on sustainable design exceeds the annual AIA sustainable design
mandatory continuing education requirement.
